Casein: Is it Essential for the Body?

source Edited with Canva

Over the last few months, I have learned a lot about types of protein, as can be seen from my last few posts which have discussed a lot about products containing protein or amino acids like BCAAs, Whey, Collagen etc. In this post, I will share information about casein which is a source of animal protein that is beneficial to the human body. All you guys can check my previous post, I discussed a few types of essential and non-essential amino acids which you guys can read in the link below.

About Casein

Casein is an essential amino acid that is generally contained in cow's milk, cheese, infant formula, and casein supplements used by bodybuilders or sports athletes to support their training. Cow's milk has 80 percent casein and 20 percent whey, this amino acid is more popular because it has higher carbohydrates, iron, and calcium than whey. But I think whey protein is more widely known to the general public because it is cheaper and has lower absorption than Casein.

Casein takes up to five hours to absorb, which is suitable for consumption by those who are on a calorie deficit diet to maintain fullness after eating. It is for this reason that I started taking this supplement to make my calorie deficit work and support low-fat muscle building. Several sources on the internet say that Casein can help maintain heart health because it contains bioactive peptides that can control blood pressure, reduce blood clots, and reduce triglyceride levels.

Other benefits of Casein are that it can boost the immune system, is antibacterial, has antioxidant properties that can fight free radicals that trigger disease in the body and can maintain digestive health. Keep in mind that before using Casein it is better to ask a doctor or medical expert for dosage and safe use, choose the type of casein that has been tested by a reputable lab, and don't be tempted by cheap supplements because the product being sold may not be pure ingredient which can be bad for the user. For people who are allergic to lactose or cow's milk can use casein supplements because it is safe for lactose intolerant, so there is no reason not to be able to meet protein intake.
