Sony's Surprising Leap into Blockchain

You heard the big news?

The company that brought us the Walkman back in the day, Sony, is leaping headfirst into the blockchain. I know; it sounds pretty out there, but let's break this one down and find out just what this is supposed to mean here.

Sony has teamed up with a company called Startale Labs to create something it's calling "Soneium." Don't worry if you're not exactly sure what blockchain is; just think of it as a nearly impenetrable digital ledger that logs lots of transactions. Soneium is going to be created or built on top of another blockchain called Ethereum, which is kind of analogous to adding an extra floor to a building.

Why was this important? Well, it's Sony. This isn't some little tech startup; it's a behemoth of a company that has been around for most of a century. People tend to pay attention when a company like Sony decides to shake things up.

And one step further, Sony is diving into the deep end. For one, they feature rather sophisticated tools such as an 'optimistic rollup' that should make the transactions faster and cheaper. And then there is a feature known as an 'OP stack' acting as a toolkit to build these blockchain systems.

Now, you may be wondering, "What does this mean for me?" Well, in the immediate term, probably not much. Sony plans to begin by simply getting people who are already into Blockchain stuff to use Soneium initially. However, in the next couple of years, things could get really interesting.

Sony has big plans to also bring blockchain technology into their other products. What would it be like if your Sony music streaming service or your PlayStation games suddenly used blockchain? It may alter the whole way of buying and selling digital goods or prove that we own something online.

But here's the thing: we have heard big companies talk about blockchain before, and nothing so serious come out of it. Remember when Facebook(Meta), used to try to create its own digital currency not long ago? That didn't go so well either. So, all exciting news aside, as great as it is that Sony is delving into it, we will, of course, have to wait and see what becomes of it.

One thing that really sets it apart is who is in charge of the project. The man heading the project has a lot of experience in this field. His name is Sota Watanabe; he is not an executive hearing that blockchain is cool but really knows his stuff. That could prove significant for whether this project takes off or falls flat.

Worth noting too, is that Sony certainly won't be the first big industry in this. A popular place to buy and sell cryptocurrencies Coinbase, announced its own version of this, as did a much attentioned project known as Worldcoin.

So, what's the takeaway here?

Well, it's just a blatant signal that blockchain technology is no more for cryptonians only at the moment. The biggest and the giant corporations are getting pumped up about the innovation. This doesn't go to show that it's going to change our lives overnight, but we might actually start seeing more practical uses of the blockchain in years to come.

It is just the kick-start that Soneum needs. They are to test it in the following days, and after that, we will be starting to see what's there.

Will it revolutionize the use of Sony products or make blockchain accessible to common people? Or, surely, it will be some tech experiment that just will not take off.

Big tech companies are gradually crawling into blockchain tech. Even if this project doesn't see that immediate light, one of thing remains certain, this incorporation will open new doors and draw in investors
