Science: The Silent Hero of Our Everyday Lives - Episode 10: Security and Protection.

In our everyday routines, we don't always notice that there's a hidden hero silently working to keep us out of harm's way. This hero isn't a person in a cape but rather something quite remarkable: "Science". In this 10th episode of our series, we're going to explore in a way that's easy to understand, how science, is making sure we stay safe and protected.

Let's get to it shall we

1. Innovative Materials:

Think about the windows in a bank or the glass on a police car. They often look like regular glass, but they are special because of science. This kind of glass is known as "bulletproof glass." It's not really magic, but it might as well be because it can stop bullets from getting through. Imagine how important this is for places like banks where they need to keep the money and people inside safe.

Now, picture a building, maybe your school or a hospital. Science has also given us materials that don't catch fire easily. We call them "fire-resistant materials." This means that if there's a fire inside the building, these materials slow down the flames. They give more time for firefighters to arrive and save lives.

These materials are like superheroes, but instead of capes, they're made of science. They're there to protect us in our homes, schools, hospitals, and even when we're out in public. So, when you're inside a secure building or a car with special glass, remember to give thanks to science because it's the hidden hero that keeps us safe, even when things get challenging.

2. Biometrics:

You know how every person has different fingerprints? Well, science has figured out how to use that fact to our advantage. Think about your smartphone, it's not just a regular phone; it's like a secret agent. It has a tiny scanner that reads your fingerprint. When you touch it, the phone knows it's really you and lets you in. It's like having a very secured lock that only listens to you.

But it's not just fingerprints. Your eyes have their unique patterns too. Science has made use of this by creating something called "biometric technology." This technology can scan the patterns in your eyes, like a special camera that only opens the door for the right person. It's not just for phones; it's used in high-security places too.

So again, the next time you unlock your phone with your fingerprint or see a high-tech security system using your eye patterns, remember that science is behind the curtain, making sure only you and the right people get access to your stuff and important data, keeping it safe and private.

3. Forensics:

You've probably watched detective shows where scientists in labs find clues to catch the bad guys. Well, that's not just for TV; it happens in real life too. Real-life scientists, known as forensic scientists, use science to gather and study evidence. Their job is very important and necessary because it helps bring justice and peace to people who have been affected by crimes.

One powerful tool they use is DNA analysis. You see, every person has a unique code inside their cells called DNA. Forensic scientists can examine this DNA left behind at a crime scene, like a fingerprint in our cells. By doing this, they can figure out who was there and, sometimes, even solve really old cases.

Speaking of fingerprints, that's another thing they look at. Just like snowflakes, no two fingerprints are the same. So when they find fingerprints at a crime scene, they can match them to a person and know who was involved.

I guess now when you see those scientists on TV solving crimes, you'd remember that they're real-life heroes using science to bring justice and closure to people who need it most.

4. Communication Encryption:

In today's digital world, when we send messages or emails, there's a risk that someone could secretly listen in or read what we're saying, kind of like a spy. That's where science comes to the rescue. Imagine you're sending a message, and before it goes out into the internet world, it gets turned into a secret code that only you and your friend can understand. Safe right? This secret code is created using special math and computer tricks. It's called "encryption."

Now, even if someone tries to peek at your message while it's traveling through the internet, all they see is this jumbled-up secret code that makes no sense to them. It's like having a secret language only you and your friend know. This makes it super hard for eavesdroppers or hackers to figure out what you're saying.

So, in simple terms, science has given us the power to turn our messages into secret codes that only the intended recipients can understand, making sure our online chats and data stay private and secured.

5. Surveillance Technology:

You know those cameras you see in stores, on streets, or even in your house? Well, they're like the eyes of science. They're not just for taking pictures; they also keep us safe. These cameras, along with special sensors, do more than just watch. They help us in emergencies.

For example, when there's a fire in a building. These clever sensors can "smell" the smoke or feel the heat, just like a superhero with super senses. When they sense something's wrong, they quickly send an alert. It's like having a friend who shouts, "Hey, there's a problem!" That alert lets people know there's danger, so they can get to safety fast.

These cameras and sensors are like silent guards working around the clock to keep us secure. They're not just for security but also for our safety. So, the next time you see a camera on the street or in a building, remember that science's watchful eyes are looking out for us, ready to spot dangers like fires and help us stay safe by giving us a heads-up.

  1. Emergency Medicine:

Now let's get a little bit technical, don't worry I won't scare you off.

Imagine you or someone you know suddenly has a very serious health problem, like their heart stops beating. In these life-or-death moments, science has given us incredible tools to help. One of these tools is called a "defibrillator." It's like a magical machine that can restart a heart that has stopped working. When someone's heart goes silent, doctors or paramedics use the defibrillator to send a small electric shock to the heart, giving a gentle wake-up call to the heart, and it often starts beating again. This amazing device has saved countless lives.

But that's not all. Science has also improved how we treat people who are seriously hurt. Imagine if someone has a bad accident, like a car crash. Doctors and nurses use advanced techniques and tools to take care of them. These include special medicines, surgeries, and even machines that help with breathing when someone can't do it on their own. All of these innovations, thanks to science, are like a safety net that catches us when we're in danger.

Conclusion

To sum it up, science may not make a lot of noise, but it's a true hero in our everyday lives, as I have proven it in all of the episodes, especially when it comes to keeping us safe. It gives us cool materials, super-advanced security stuff, and medical breakthroughs that save lives. So, whenever you're feeling secured, know that science is the quiet hero always looking out for you, even if it doesn't ask for any applause.

Here's the 10th toast and an applaud to our Hero. 🥂👏.

Thanks for reading to the end, hope you enjoyed it.
