Effect of onion slurry on stored grains | Efecto del purín de cebolla en granos almacenados

You are sure to have seen these curious guests in your vegetable gardens. Curculionids are very common pest insects in "stored grains". As they have a hard body, they are difficult to kill, even worse if they are constantly hiding.

De seguro viste alguna vez en tús menestras a estos curiosos invitados. Los "curculionidos" son insectos plaga muy comunes en los "granos almacenados". Al tener un cuerpo duro es difícil matarlos y se esconden constantemente en sus cuevas.

When you see this, it means that there is a considerable population and they are called "pest insects". They were introduced either in the field (harvested grains with adequate moisture content) or in storage, being next to other infested grains.

Cuando vez esto, significa que hay una población considerable y se les llama "insectos plaga". Quienes fueron introducidos ya sea en campo (granos cosechados con grado de humedad adecuado) o en almacén, al estar junto a otros granos infestados.

I split some grains, to see the damage and they did have almost 40% damage.

Abrí unos granos, para ver el daño y sí que tenían casi el 40% de daño.

The experiment aimed to test onion slurry as a pesticidal agent for stored grain pests. For this I measured the time (minutes) of mortality.

El objetivo de este experimento fue comprobar el purín de cebolla como agente pesticida para la plaga de granos almacenados. Para esto medí el tiempo (minutos) de mortandad.

Los individuos muertos van cayendo al fondo. Los moribundos flotan y los vivos nadan y bucean en el purín de cebolla.

En otra ocasión, repetí el experimento y estos fueron los resultados.

In conclusion, the degree of mortality is variable. It ranges from seconds to hours. However, it is a better alternative compared to drinking water (more than 12 hours and they are still alive). Next time, you can add other ingredients and repeat the experiment.

En conclusión, es variable el grado de mortandad. Siendo desde segundos hasta horas. Aunque, si es una mejor alternativa comparado con el agua potable (más de 12 horas y siguen vivos). Para la próxima, se puede adicionar otros ingredientes y repetir el experimento.
