Mandatory kill switches are already part of the law in USSA (effective since 2026) and the only long term solution is open source software + hardware. You may want to HODL your "Dumb Cars" for the short and medium term.

This is mainstream coverage from 8 years ago demonstrating how bad car security is. We had plenty of time to see this coming:
There are more in depth presentations on YouTube. You don't have to go to obscure forums to learn how vulnerable vehicles are!

i think (hope) they can't spy on a 2007 Renault Megane :-)

It is matter of internet connectivity + the amount of computer controlled parts and data collection that is happening with your car. You are probably safe. It is best if you ask someone who know more about cars.
If we can build open source guns, we can definitely build open source cars. Cars are going to be used far more than guns. Cars are a bigger privacy threat for most individuals.

How does this make your car a bigger privacy threat? Your car only listens while you're in the car, your phone listens everywhere you go.

Cars have far more vulnerabilities compared to the phones. This is not merely about listening in. Cars have kill switches and they can be hacked to cause accidents that could lead to death. Cars can track where you are going. Cars have cameras that record everything.
The phone may track you and listen to you while it is in your pocket. A car with 360 degree cameras will record everything around and even send to a central server when instructed. Worst parts happen when you phone is connected to your car. Watch the video. Your car can collect data off of your smartphone.
Aside from the accidents leading to death, everything in the first paragraph is also true of your phone. For people like me, who drive old cars with no WiFi, OnStar, or any kind of GPS, the only thing tracking me in my car is my phone.
