EtherMail - The future of Email for Web3 wallets | Anonymous and encrypted communication

We are witnessing more and more the jump from Web 2 to Web 3.0. Perhaps it is a process of adaptation to the new technological era based on blockchain. What is certain is that the world is evolving in that sense, and let me tell you, great things are yet to come.

Estamos presenciando cada vez más el salto desde la Web 2 a la Web 3.0. Quizás se trate de un proceso de adaptación a la nueva era tecnológica basada en blockchain. Lo que sí es cierto es que el mundo está evolucionando hacia ese sentido, y permítanme decirlo, grandes cosas estarán por venir.

I think that those of us who interact daily with traditional platforms know the disadvantages of using the different services that are offered to us. The two most notorious problems and that cause us the most damage as a society (in this case we are an online community) are privacy and censorship.

Creo que quienes interactuamos a diario con las plataformas tradicionales conocemos las desventajas de utilizar los distintos servicios que se nos ofrecen. Los dos problemas más notorios y que mayor daño nos hacen como sociedad (en este caso somos una comunidad internauta) son la privacidad y la censura.

We often notice that on social networks our comments are censored, and even our own account runs the risk of receiving a suspension for a reason that is not worth it, making our ability to express ourselves reduced to a minimum. Just to give an example, on platforms like Instagram one cannot mention certain words because a warning message will appear immediately and it does not distinguish contexts, that is, our intention may not be to offend someone but it takes it that way.

Muchas veces notamos que en las redes sociales nuestros comentarios son censurados, e incluso nuestra propia cuenta corre el riesgo de recibir una suspensión por un motivo que no lo vale, haciendo que nuestra capacidad de expresarnos se reduzca a lo más mínimo. Sin ir más lejos en plataformas como Instagram uno no puede hacer mención a ciertas palabras porque enseguida aparecerá un mensaje de precaución y no distingue contextos, es decir, puede que nuestra intención no sea ofender a alguien pero así lo toma.

Privacy is another issue that is saved by this medium, because we are the ones who decide what information we handle on the network.

La Web3 soluciona estos problemas y lo hemos comprobado siendo partícipes de ello. Nosotros tenemos el control de nuestra cuenta y no corremos el riesgo de que alguien nos la quite (en la otra web hubieron usuarios que perdieron su perfil cuando la compañía se la apropió). La privacidad es otro tema que se ve salvado por este medio, pues nosotros somos quienes decidimos qué información manejamos en la red.

Recuerdo una vez que tuve que abandonar una de mis cuentas de correo porque estaba excedida en lo que son mensajes de spam que se continuaban acumulando hasta superar los 1000 mensajes. La verdad que puede llegar a ser molesto algo así, pues es algo muy invasivo. Por otro lado existía el riesgo de que entre los tantos mensajes recibidos, hayan varios que se hacían pasar por empresas genuinas que justamente lo que intentaban eran hacer algún intento de estafa enviándote a un sitio falso muy similar al original.

For my part I would prefer to have a clean email in which only emails from the people or companies I know and chose to contact me arrive. This seems to have finally arrived and through Web3 technology.

EtherMail is a project that seeks to protect our information and not make it public, except if we allow it ourselves. By needing a wallet like MetaMask (using the Ethereum network), we are the ones who have the power of our account. The messages are now encrypted, anonymous and safe, as it sounds, so that P2P communication preserves anonymity.

EtherMail es un proyecto que lo que busca es que nuestra información esté protegida y no sea divulgada, excepto si nosotros mismos lo permitimos. Al necesitar de una billetera como MetaMask (utilizando la red de Ethereum), nosotros somos quienes tenemos el poder de nuestra cuenta. Los mensajes ahora son encriptados, anónimos y seguros, tal como así suena, por lo que la comunicación del tipo P2P preserva el anonimato.

In particular I think it's great even though my first impression is that this is a way that can be used for other purposes; in that case, what solution could they implement? What is certain, at least for me, is that at some point this will become a standard and an evolution that we must go through in the best way with respect to traditional ways of sending an email.

En lo particular me parece muy bien aunque la primera impresión que me genera es que esta sea una vía que pueda utilizarse para otros propósitos; en ese caso, ¿qué solución podrían implementar? Lo que es seguro, al menos para mí, es que en algún momento esto se convertirá en un estándar y una evolución que debemos atravesar de la mejor manera respecto a las formas tradicionales de enviar un e-mail.

What I can highlight about this messaging is that the keys are stored on the blockchain, so only the user can access it, as well as the anti-spam protection because companies should pay to send the messages. And as we have said before, the strong point may be the security of sending an email from end to end, making even the Ethermail team unable to see the emails or information that users send.

Lo que puedo destacar de esta mensajería es que las llaves se almacenan en la blockchain, por lo que sólo el usuario es quien puede acceder como también está la protección anti-spam debido a que las compañías deberían pagar para hacer el envío de los mensajes. Y como hemos dicho anteriormente, el punto fuerte tal vez sea la seguridad de que el enviar un e-mail se logre de extremo a extremo, haciendo que incluso el equipo de Ethermail no pueda tener visibilidad sobre los e-mails o la información que los usuarios envían.

In my opinion and to finish these lines, the intention that EtherMail has is to become a standard for communication between wallets in order to safeguard information; although to tell the truth, the competition that currently exists could become a problem for this technology to take off as it deserves, because no one can deny the progress of Web 3.0 over what we know today as traditional. Will there be a coexistence between both? Maybe, for my part I have no problem with it, because I only wish to experience each technology as something new and spectacular.

En mi opinión y para finalizar estas líneas, la intención que tiene EtherMail es la de convertirse en un estándar para la comunicación entre billeteras al resguardo de la información; aunque a decir verdad, la competencia que existe actualmente podría llegar a ser un problema para que esta tecnología logre despegar como lo merece, pues nadie puede negar el avance de la Web 3.0 sobre lo que hoy conocemos como tradicional. ¿Habrá una convivencia entre ambas? Tal vez, por mi parte no tengo problema en ello, pues solo deseo experimentar cada tecnología como algo novedoso y espectacular.
