Technology is positively impacting healthcare systems by introducing a new use that seems to be a relief for many doctors and specialists. Now it is possible for AI to take care of medical transcription while doctors describe it as magical.
The name Abridge resonates with many venture capitalists who see a market with significant growth in the medical field. It is a company based in Pittsburgh and was launched before OpenAI became truly popular.
This idea was born in 2019 when a cardiologist named Shiv Rao proposed to Union Squares Ventures' general partner, Andy Weissman, the idea of creating an application that could combine SoundCloud with RapGenius and focus its results on medicine. Obviously, at first glance, this idea might seem outlandish. However, upon reconsideration, it started to make a lot of sense and the next step was taken, which determined the success of the idea.
The burden of patient information can take a significant amount of time, compounded by other factors such as physician burnout, who must carve out time from their schedule (possibly during their breaks) to cover this aspect.
AI, in this respect, can significantly reduce the time spent on these activities, allowing the physician to focus more deeply on the patient. Therefore, it is likely that other companies are considering similar AI-driven systems, which are indeed part of the future and the present.
Weissman is fully convinced that artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in the growth of the field of medicine, knowing that Rao, in addition to being a physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, also had a penchant for investing in healthcare technology companies, making it a perfect match.
After an initial round of $5 million, the startup Abridge has experienced rapid growth and recognition in a very short time. Despite the fact that AI has not yet fully gained trust due to typical issues of wandering or "hallucination", many companies focused on the medical system are considering this option for investment and contract signing. It is clear that LLMs will improve over time and become much more accurate after extensive daily use training.
According to Rao, the sales cycle for healthcare systems is 18 to 24 months. Taking into account the time for system development and improvement, there is huge potential for it to be acquired by medical entities. In fact, he mentions that there has been a significant increase in customers choosing Abridge.
As a technology, Abridge allows background recording while the patient is in consultation. In this way, as mentioned earlier, the physician can focus on the patient, as the concern of completing certain fields of the medical record is now the responsibility of the AI.

Right now there is a growing demand for AI-driven Abridge systems. In fact, Abridge is leading the competition among similar systems like Ambiance, Nabla, and Suki, but considering that technology keeps improving, it is likely that the leadership will be lost in the long term. Although that is clear, if there is a new leader it is because they will have offered something revolutionary or at least substantial that is vastly superior.
Virtual medical notes still have a lot to develop and innovate, and everything will need to be adjusted to the performance they can achieve so that doctors can do their work in the most optimal way possible for a good performance in the field of medicine.
Abridge has managed to raise $150 million in February in a Series C round led by Lightspeed Ventures. A venture capital firm that is valued at an incredible $850 million. More significant investments are expected.

This is really huge.
I always think less of AI but this? This is a proof that AI will surpass our expectations.
If all hospitals adopt this system, manpower will not longer be as important as it is. The only place it will be needed will be in the theatre and providing wholistic nursing care.
I bet this tool can diagnose an illness too.
