Quest 3 released today, but demand seems very low compared to forecast, is standalone holding VR back?
Was meint ihr?
Quest 3 demand not as high as expected?

According to a report on Medium, the projections of 7.5 million Quest 3 sales have been reduced to 2.5 million. That would be a dramatic cut.
The Quest 2 sold about 10 million units in its first year.
Next year, only 1 million Quest 3s are expected to be ordered at all.
You can see from the numbers that VR is still quite a niche.
What bothers me, besides the weight of the Quest 3, is that Meta is mainly concentrating on standalone and MR experiences and not on PCVR.
As great as standalone is with the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, mobile is still mobile and even the best mobile chip won't come close to the performance of a potent gaming PC.
While PC games are slowly becoming photo-realistic with the latest hardware generation, standalone graphics feel like mobile games 10 or 20 years ago.
There is also supposed to be only a standalone version of Assassin's Creed Nexus, although Meta is also running a PCVR platform alongside the standalone, but in my opinion it is rather neglected.
Nevertheless, I'm thinking of upgrading from the Quest 2 to the Quest 3, as it's a big improvement in terms of hardware.
What do you think? Why do VR games still look like games from 10-20 years ago? Is standalone holding back VR?

Virtual reality is an exciting technology with significant potential, but it still faces challenges in terms of visual quality and accessibility for most people. Standalone modes have expanded the user base and made VR more affordable, which is positive for its adoption. However, to reach its full potential, VR needs to continue evolving in terms of both hardware and software to provide increasingly realistic and immersive experiences.
PCs are timeless
There's nothing better than a gamer pc than a bed and the empty house of an unpainted room 😁.
maybe it is still difficult to make rpg games in VR. or maybe the file size would be way too big for VR?
Don't think file size is a problem any more, all 3D games are suitable for VR in my opinion if correctly adopted for VR.
Visual quality just isn't nearly as good, they need to catch up before there will be mass adoption. I personally won't be buying one.
I think that virtual reality is one of those technologies that always promises a lot but then never meets expectations.
Omg, the world is really advancing at a fast pace

it is very ironic. virtual reality sounds very advance but the games are way behind.
It seems to me that sometimes companies focus on one product or topic the most because once they get a market they hope the others will follow suit.

I think it's the technology that isn't there yet. I think a monitor is much easier to control and make the graphics better. If you also consider DLSS technology just being added to normal games, it will take some time before it can even be applied to VR games.

The fragmentation of the market with increasing competition from mobile gaming is not helping either. People buy hype, but VR hype is gone so unless a new successful campaign is launched, VR will probably be lagging behind for a few years at least.
The way we see that the technology is developing a lot and things are becoming much easier for us and through this technology we can play our favorite games and watch movies and so on. It will seem that we are walking in them.
