Number of computer science students is declining. End of the coding era? What is still worth studying?
Laut einem FT-Artikel ist die Zahl an Informatik-Studenten rückläufig. Abiturienten fragen sich, was sie überhaupt im Zeitalter von KI noch studieren sollen, und wo es in Zukunft überhaupt noch gute Jobaussichten gibt.
Wobei Letzteres nicht immer bei der Wahl der Studienrichtung ausschlaggebend ist und war, viele studieren defaultmäßig Politikwissenschaften, Publizistik oder Psychologie, best-case aus persönlichem Interesse, worst-case um einfach irgendetwas zu studieren, nicht wegen den guten Jobaussichten, oder nur um einen Titel zu erlangen, oder nicht sofort arbeiten zu müssen.
Denke, dass es aber auch im Zeitalter von KI Sinn macht MINT-Fächer oder Medizin zu studieren.
Ein Informatik-Studium ist viel mehr als nur das Erlernen von Programmiersprachen, es sollte eher darum gehen die Hintergründe zu verstehen, abstrakte Aufgaben zu lösen, letztendlich das analytische, computationale und kritische Denken zu fördern.
Letztendlich denke ich aber, dass man etwas studieren sollte, das einem wirklich interessiert und Spaß macht, jobmäßig könnten handwerkliche Jobs und Jobs im medizinischen Bereich, in der Pflege, in Zukunft gefragter werden, bis auch diese allmählich von KIs erfasst und sukzessive gelöst werden können. Auch der Entertainment- und Services-Bereich könnte im KI-Zeitalter boomen.
Alles in allem keine einfache Entscheidung gerade für Gen Alphas, ob und was man überhaupt studieren soll.
Was würdet ihr in dieser Situation machen oder empfehlen? Was im Zeitalter von KI überhaupt noch lernen? Zahlt sich studieren noch aus oder besser gleich ein Handwerk erlernen?

According to an FT article, the number of computer science students is declining. High school graduates are wondering what they should even study in the age of AI, and where there will still be good job prospects in the future.
That said, the latter isn’t always, and hasn’t always been, the deciding factor when choosing a field of study, many students default to political science, journalism, or psychology, at best out of personal interest, at worst just to study something, not because of good job prospects, or simply to earn a degree, or to avoid having to start working right away.
I think, however, that even in the age of AI, it makes sense to study STEM subjects or medicine.
A degree in computer science is much more than just learning to code, it should be more about understanding the underlying principles, solving abstract problems, and ultimately fostering analytical, computational, and critical thinking.
Ultimately, though, I think you should study something that truly interests you and that you enjoy. In terms of careers, skilled trades and jobs in the medical field and in nursing might become more in demand in the future, until even these are gradually taken over by AI and can be handled by it. The entertainment and service sectors could also boom in the age of AI.
All in all, it’s not an easy decision atm, especially for Gen Alphas, whether to study at all, and if so, what to study.
What would you do or recommend to aspiring students? What’s even worth studying in the age of AI? Is it still worth going to college, or is it better to learn a trade or something practical right away?
Ich glaube, wir stellen vielleicht die falsche Frage. Nicht "Welcher Beruf ist im Zeitalter von KI zukunftssicher?", sondern: Was machen wir mit einer Gesellschaft, in der irgendwann schlicht nicht mehr für alle Menschen Arbeit gebraucht wird? Handwerk und Robotik zeigen ja schon, dass auch vermeintlich sichere Bereiche nicht dauerhaft sicher sein müssen.
I don't know the answer but I'd imagine it would be stressful and hard to make a decision nowadays. Anything in medicine would be safe, like you mentioned. I work in a hospital and AI ain't taking my job or any of my colleagues. The unfortunate part for me also means that i have no opportunity to work remotely. I think jobs that involve working directly with people would be safe or (aside from low level service industry jobs where a person could serve themselves). Jobs that require physical skill/labor also at least until AI can be put into a robot body. Then we're really fucked.
Unbedingt ein Handwerk erlernen, bzw. praktische Fähigkeiten, die sich auch im Falle eines SHTF-Szenarios als nützlich erweisen können.
Solch ein Szenario wird sowohl durch die Migration als auch die Kriegstreiberei der EU immer wahrscheinlicher.

While we might end up in the world where most of the computer code is written by AI, we still will need people who can read the instructions written by our robot overlords.

My Son actually teaches part time elementary aged school kids how to code.

I think it might be the end with AI coming up. Sure, it might not be the best but it can replace alot of people. I just think the economy is going to be rough as AI is introduced more and more into jobs.
