How to play Portal 2 in VR 😎

avatar
(Edited)

https://github.com/Gistix/portal2vr/releases

-insecure -window -novid +mat_motion_blur_percent_of_screen_max 0 +mat_queue_mode 0 +mat_vsync 0 +mat_antialias 0 +mat_grain_scale_override 0 -width 1280 -height 720

"Use Desktop Game Theater when launching desktop games with SteamVR is active" deaktivieren.

Trotzdem besteht hohe Motion-Sickness-Gefahr.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Würdet ihr Portal in VR zocken?

There is an unofficial mod that allows you to play Portal 2 in VR. And without graphical limitations (with the original graphics from 2011) from the game.

Tried it out yesterday and here's how it works:

(1) You need Portal 2 on Steam and a PCVR/Steam compatible headset (e.g. Quest 2).

(2) download portal2vr mod

https://github.com/Gistix/portal2vr/releases

Click on the latest version and then download the zip file.

(3) Extract the mod (Portal2VR.zip or Portal2VR-preview.zip) into the directory of Portal 2 (steamapps\common\Portal 2)

(4) In Steam, select Portal 2 and change the game settings as follows:

Add launch options:

-insecure -window -novid +mat_motion_blur_percent_of_screen_max 0 +mat_queue_mode 0 +mat_vsync 0 +mat_antialias 0 +mat_grain_scale_override 0 -width 1280 -height 720

"Disable Use Desktop Game Theater when launching desktop games with SteamVR is active".

(5) Launch SteamVR and Portal 2

To do this, first launch the headset, launch SteamVR in the headset (for Quest2, first connect to Oculus Link), then launch Portal 2 on the desktop and start a new game.

Then Portal 2 should appear in VR in the headset.

(6) To adjust the camera height setting when you first launch, you need to press the left stick. For me, it was set too high at the beginning.

Voila!

The mod works surprisingly well, you can navigate with the stick and walk through portals in VR, which feels surprisingly natural after a short time.

Still, there is a high risk of motion sickness. I haven't gotten as far as jumping through portals yet, but I think it will be pretty intense in VR.

The stick controls and button hopping alone can make you motion-sick.

But I think it's cool to be able to play such a classic game in VR, and I wonder why Valve doesn't offer this officially, or why more triple A games are adapted for VR, not with limited mobile graphics, but with the full-scale graphics quality of a real PC game.

What do you guys think about the mod? Would you play Portal in VR?

The motion sickness I could live without but it sounds really cool. I would like to try it out it's just that the VR headsets have never felt all that natural to me. I probably just not used to them as of yet...

I think it's nice to have the option but I don't know if I would really want to play it in VR. It would be a nice experience though.

Some time ago, this technology became very popular, people were using it to see things and play games, but now its use is less.

There are quite a few VR games that already give me motion sickness let alone modded ones - I think it's just that whole feeling of moving without actually moving does it to me. Probably something some people can tolerate more then others.

Really neat mod though for a classic game, thanks for sharing and I do agree as it's obviously possible Steam should really be offering more VR conversions of titles that would work well in VR.

It will be interesting for sure. we don't have much opportunities to explore VR.

If I would play it virtual reality is the closest thing to reality .
And how you explain it seems to me very striking description.
