Spores vs helminths

Es increíble como el mundo microbiano nos sorprende. En este video podrán ver lo que me ocurrió en mi proceso de aislamiento e identificación de esporas de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares. Lamentablemente no es por ser spoiler pero ya sabemos quién ganó la batalla entre un helminto y una espora. Para entrar en contexto es un organismo multicelular el cual puede vivir en vida libre en el suelo o en forma de parásito dentro de un hospedero (animal incluyendo los seres humanos). Por su parte, las esporas son estructuras de reproducción y latencia de organismos como hongos y algunas bacterias Gram positivas.

It is incredible how the microbial world surprises us. In this video you can see what happened to me in my process of isolation and identification of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spores. Unfortunately it is not for being a spoiler but we already know who won the battle between a helminth and a spore. To put it in context, it is a multicellular organism which can live freely in the soil or as a parasite within a host (animal including humans). For their part, spores are reproduction and latency structures of organisms such as fungi and some Gram positive bacteria.

En este caso nos topamos con una esporas de hongo micorrízico arbuscular. Estos hongos son beneficiosos para las plantas ya que se encuentran en una asociación simbiótica ganar- ganar. El hongo le ofrece un mayor volumen de exploración en el suelo a la planta a partir de hifas, y la planta le provee carbohidratos y nutrientes para su manutención. Es importante destacar que estos hongos esporulan y sueltan estas esporas al suelo las cuales luego germinan y colonizan las raíces de las plantas.

In this case we come across an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus spore. These fungi are beneficial to plants as they are in a symbiotic win-win association. The fungus offers a greater volume of exploration in the soil to the plant from hyphae, and the plant provides carbohydrates and nutrients for its maintenance. It is important to note that these fungi sporulate and release these spores to the soil, which then germinate and colonize the roots of the plants.
