Lady Musgrave reef from a drone

G'day hive!

Happy New Year πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

We just got back from a little getaway to 1770 in Queensland Australia.

1770 is the gateway to the most southern part of the Great Barrier reef. Which is about a 2 hour boat ride to Lady Musgrave Island.

We were all set for a day of snorkeling the reef and exploring Lady Musgrave Island.

So once we anchored up I thought this would be the perfect time to send my drone up and get some shots of the boat and reef.

I went through the back deck while people were slowly getting into the water for a snorkel I found a gap of opportunity and sent my drone up.

Now I thought at this point if I'm not allowed to fly my drone here it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

The moment the drone went up it was instantly caught in a strong wind pushing the drone up and to the front of the boat.

One of the deck hands came straight to me and said it's all good just don't fly it above the top of the boat so it won't hit any GPS and location antennas. Which is fair enough. Then he said he would open the front of the boat up for me so I could land and launch it from there. What a legend!.

I couldn't fly it above or land on Lady Musgrave Island as it is a natural habitat which is home to thousands of birds. But the island was about a kilometer away and I wasn't too keen on sending the drone that far out anyway.

None the less I got some cool shots of the boat and the reef.

There were a couple of large bommies around the boat which were full of sea life including large gropers and turtles. I even followed an octopus for a bit which was super cool.

Lady Musgrave Island has a huge lagoon.

And you can see the entrance into the lagoon in this pic.

Now there is speculation if this is a natural entrance? Or if it was widen with dynamite by guano miners many years ago..
As lady Musgrave Island was mined for Guano (aka bird shit) by Halifax and was used as fertilizer.

The water inside the lagoon is so calm compared to the sea outside of the reef! It was a bit of a wild ride here and back that's for sure.

As the tide ran out the coral started sticking out of the water. Leaving little rock pools on top of the reef.

This was the perfect time for me to jump back into the water.

That was really awesome and good job with flying!

Personally I've never taken my drone that high.

Hopefully you are a part of the drone group here on hive as well!

It looks like a nice reef. How is it underwater?

This reef is amazing! There is so much underwater life here. And the visibility was excellent! Lots of reef fish, sharks, turtles and I even got to see a octopus!
I'll go through my underwater cam shots soon and will write a blog, so stay tuned
