OpenAI working on new reasoning technology code-named ‘Strawberry’

ChatGPT maker, OpenAI is reportedly building a "new reasoning technology" AI model code-named “Strawberry” to help its artificial intelligence tools reach human-level intelligence through advanced reasoning to solve more complex real-world problems at scale. This was reported by Reuters on July 12. OpenAI sources say that Strawberry is designed to effectively scan the internet autonomously and reliably carry out “deep research.”

In clearer terms, Strawberry's documentation hints that the AI model will not just generate answers to queries but plan enough to navigate the internet autonomously and reliably. This capability is lacking in existing AI models to date, according to interviews with more than a dozen AI researchers.

Reuters reported that an OpenAI spokesperson familiar with the project's internal documentation mentioned some of the possibilities of the "new reasoning technology" include making major scientific discoveries and building new software applications, among other tasks that require deep thinking at the human intelligence level. The spokesperson furthered that:

“We want our AI models to see and understand the world more like we do. Continuous research into new AI capabilities is a common practice in the industry, with a shared belief that these systems will improve in reasoning over time.”

To achieve the expected intelligent output, Strawberry will conduct an extensive “post-training” analysis of OpenAI’s existing AI models to craft more humanlike responses to prompts.

On completion, Strawberry will be a novel artificial intelligence model. The details of the project, which have not been previously reported, come as the Microsoft-backed startup races to show that the types of models it offers are capable of delivering advanced reasoning capabilities.

Sources working with OpenAI who spoke to Reuters on Strawberry describe the project as a work in progress. Reuters could not establish how close Strawberry is to being publicly available.
