Google Rebrands Bard AI Chatbot as "Gemini"

Alphabet's Google has officially rebranded its Bard artificial intelligence chatbot as Gemini, named after Google's most powerful AI model powering the tool. The tech giant announced the rebrand, and also mentioned the launch of a mobile app in the United States. This development was communicated through Google's vice president, Sissie Hsiao, who doubles as general manager for Google Assistant and Bard on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Bard AI Chatbox is barely 11 months old and would now share identity with the firm’s multimodal large language model. Along with the rebrand, Google has rolled out a mobile app for Android and iOS devices in the United States now available in over 40 languages, with a promise to make it available in more locations and languages soon. Gemini's app launch also comes with a subscription plan for a premium version of the tool called Gemini Advanced.

Gemini Advanced will be available as part of the Google One AI Premium Plan for $19.99 per month. This move is pitched to help Google compete better with premium versions of tools offered by rivals such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot.

In a statement captured in a separate blog post, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, noted that the Google One subscription service could soon cross 100 million subscribers. He also claimed the technology underlying Gemini Advanced will eventually be able to outthink even the smartest people when tackling many complex topics.

Google further claims that its AI is far more capable of highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions, and collaborating on creative projects. Specifically, Gemini Advanced is designed can be a personal tutor that can create step-by-step instructions or sample quizzes tailored to a defined learning style. Moreover, it is designed to help digital creators go from idea to creation by generating fresh content, as it can analyze recent trends, and brainstorm on improved ways to grow a user's audience.

With this development, it is obvious that AI has received a new leap, and it's incumbent on prospective users to prepare how to make the most of the possibilities that would be made available.
