Scheduled for activation on the mainnet on January 14, 2026, at approximately 02:30 AM UTC, this hard fork promises to deliver substantial improvements in transaction speed, network throughput, and overall efficiency. The upgrade comes as part of BNB Chain's ongoing efforts to enhance its competitiveness among Layer-1 blockchains, particularly in supporting high-demand applications like decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming, and time-sensitive trading.

The Fermi hard fork, named after the renowned physicist Enrico Fermi, builds on a series of previous upgrades that have progressively optimized the network's performance. Earlier hard forks such as Lorentz, Maxwell, and Pascal have already reduced block times significantly, from initial 3-second intervals down to the current 750 milliseconds, while improving validator stability and Ethereum compatibility. Fermi represents the next phase in this evolution, focusing on further refining the chain's core mechanics to handle increasingly complex and high-volume use cases.

Key Features of the Fermi Upgrade

The Fermi hard fork will introduce a substantial reduction in block intervals. The upgrade will shorten the time between blocks from 750 milliseconds to 450 milliseconds—a roughly 40% improvement. This change, implemented through BEP-619 (Short Block Interval Phase Three: 0.45 Seconds), is expected to dramatically increase transaction processing speeds and reduce latency for users.

  • BEP-590: Extended Voting Rules for Fast Finality Stability:- This improves the Fast Finality protocol by adjusting how validator votes are counted, addressing potential communication lags and ensuring more reliable transaction finality even under network stress.

  • BEP-592: Non-Consensus Based Block-Level Access List:- Introduces a new indexing mechanism that allows for partial access to ledger data without requiring full consensus, optimizing data retrieval for nodes and applications.

  • BEP-593: Incremental Snapshot:- Enhances node synchronization and state management by implementing incremental snapshots, which reduce the time and resources needed for new nodes to join the network or recover from downtime.

  • BEP-610: Implement EVM Super Instruction:- Optimizes Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) execution at the opcode level, leading to lower gas consumption and faster processing of smart contracts.

These changes are complemented by additional improvements, such as EVM execution optimizations and bug fixes, included in the BSC client release v1.6.4, which node operators must adopt prior to the hard fork.

Timeline and Preparation

The Fermi upgrade has already undergone rigorous testing. The testnet version (BSC client v1.6.2) was activated in November 2025, allowing developers and the community to simulate high-load scenarios and identify any issues. Stress tests conducted during this period helped refine the implementation, paving the way for the mainnet rollout.

BNB Chain developers have emphasized the importance of preparation for all ecosystem participants. Full node operators, validators, and infrastructure providers are required to upgrade to v1.6.4 before the activation time to avoid disruptions. The upgrade will trigger a snapshot regeneration process, which may temporarily impact node performance, estimates suggest around 5 hours on standard hardware.

For end-users, such as wallet holders and dApp interactors, the hard fork is largely seamless, with no direct action needed. However, projects that have forked the BSC codebase are advised to monitor closely and consider pausing operations if necessary, as compatibility issues could arise.

With the Fermi hard fork, the BNB Chain aims to close the gap with traditional payment systems, such as Visa's average of 1,700 TPS, while maintaining the decentralization and security of blockchain technology. This is particularly crucial for time-sensitive applications where even milliseconds can impact outcomes, such as high-frequency trading on decentralized exchanges or real-time Web3 gaming.
