Artificial Intelligence (AI) has potential to improve efficiency, analyze data and work for solutions to problems more effectively than people can. I have written about how AI is being used to help find and fix environmental problems, improve business efficiency and much more. AI can be focused on social issues as well, and can even be used to stop violence through surveillance and pattern recognition.

AI can look at data and find patterns that may be elusive to the human eye. It is true that results of AI analysis should be quality checked by humans, and using AI to solve or find the root cause of social issues is controversial. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in the United States, and it is the duty of schools and public places to ensure the safety of customers, students and patrons. Metal detectors and pat downs are commonly used to find weapons, but areas with high traffic can be better served with AI programmed to find weapons. AI can also integrate with surveillance cameras and checkpoints to alert human guards to threats.

Evolv Technology is a publically traded security technology company specializing in alternatives to metal detectors and security platforms. Evolv is currently being used in commercial and educational settings, and uses an AI to locate weapons as individuals walk past detectors. In essence, the AI takes the place of intrusive and potentially inaccurate methods and locates weapons quickly. AI can be used in crowd security and physical checkpoints to quickly identify threats from camera feeds and scans and can make physical security efforts more effective. Essentially, AI works as a tool so guards and officers can focus on their efficiencies.

Aside from access control, AI is being used in security applications to take a “proactive approach” to threats. AI can monitor behavior, building a facility system for sabotage, and personal movements. AI can integrate with cameras and badging systems to track employees and establish threat monitoring and assessment. Hakimo software is working to integrate AI into all aspects of traditional physical security at a location including employee movement, camera feeds and building controls. AI can see patterns and report anomalies that might be overlooked by humans. Pattern recognition is what makes AI a security power tool.

AI has another role in security. The proactive approach in physical security means locating threats and hot spots before loss occurs. Recently, social media has been used to identify threats, and the controversial usage of AI to locate threats based on potentially threatening patterns is being explored. An AI could be used to locate threatening communications and assess the threat based on recent actions, movements and purchases. AI can function as a digital detective that requires human oversight. Mistakes in threat assessment could be costly and could lead detectives off the right path if the machine analysis is not accurate. AI has the potential to impact the security industry by helping security professionals recognize threats and potential vulnerabilities in their area of responsibility.

A more likely case is that AI will be used to rewards the friends and punish the enemies of Big Tech.

For example, AI might be used to search for the January 6th insurrectionists.

AI used in physical policing will be like the algorithms used to shadow ban people critical of the government response to COVID13. AI will be used to enforce the world view and prejudices of the creators of AI.

I agree. The AI is a tool, and whoever controls it can use it as they see fit. But, there are some positive applications in security, medicine and environemental engineering that could be positive. !hbit
