Time for another dose of weird nature!

Today I bring you something from the deep blue. Something that looks like a frog but is actually a fish. Something that is ugly as fuck 😂

Ok, ugly but in a cute kind of way 🤩😍

As mentioned in the video, this is a Chaunax, which is a genus of sea toad consisting of 25 currently described species.

These fish occur in tropical and subtropical oceans all over the world and most species are found depths between 180 and 1,100 m. Depending on the species, their length varies from 11 to 40 cm.

As also explained in the video, these fish have modified fins that help them walk in the ocean floor instead of swimming.

They tend to be sedentary fish, consuming whatever they find within their immediate reach, like on the ocean floor. Their first dorsal fin is particularly helpful in that, helping them catch small marine life:

The first dorsal fin ray is modified into a short bioluminescent lure which dangles forward over the mouth, which is turned upwards so as to be nearly vertical. source

Essentially a lure used to ambush other
fish. So yeah...A fish that fishes.😂😂

There's usually not much food in their habitat so it makes sense to conserve as much energy as they can. So they usually just stay in place doing pretty much nothing...
