š·ļøš·ļøš·ļø Itsy Bitsy Spider - Green Huntsman š·ļøš·ļøš·ļø
Wife got a new toy for me my son from temu. Dunno how it's called, but it's like a pair of scissors but with a big capsule for a tip designed for catching bugs and shit.
Much like me, my son loves playing with them. Spiders, ants, worms...if it crawls he wants to play it with.. He loves squishing them to death too, but I am trying to teach him about death and stuff and how it's only justifiable when you plan to sustain yourself :)
Anyways, we made a new friend today that he grew particularly fond off
Don't ask me why, but when it comes to spiders and ladybugs he always was and is super careful to not damage them. I guess he likes em too much for whatever reason and doesn't enjoy harming them. The young mind works in mysterious ways š
I am no spider expert but what we got is probably a green huntsman, scientifically described as as Micrommata virescens. A very common spider in Northern and Central Europe. That or a closely related species.
This one is probably a female specimen, as it fits the general female phenotype when it comes to color and size:
In the females of Micrommata virescens, the body length can reach 12ā16 millimetres (0.47ā0.63 in), while in the males it is about 7ā10 millimetres (0.28ā0.39 in).
The cephalothorax and the long legs of the females are bright green, with a lighter green abdomen showing a darker green median stripe. The eight eyes are arranged in two rows and surrounded by white hairs. Males are dark green-olive and have a narrower abdomen, with red sides and a red to red-brown median stripe bordered yellow. Young spiders have a yellow-brown cephalothorax, with dark marginal and median stripes. Only after the last molting in the following spring the juveniles assume the typical coloration of the adults. source

The weather is only getting better from now on so we will be catching lots of bugs, expect more posts like this one soon :)
I think we will keep the spider for a few more hours before we return it to a bush or something.
Our little huntsman needs to hunt after all :)

I had a few of those on me, glad to know it was only spiders and not crabs
Your son would probably grow up to become a zoologist... Hehehehe. Years ago, my cousin loved dissecting lizards and rats and sometimes keeping them in his cage, today he's a veterinary Doctor. Talk about catching 'em young.
Good thing he became a vet. Usually it's that...or a serial killer šš

Cool spider! I haven't seen a green spider since I lived in South America!

Very true
I have never seen a green spider before, but now that I think of it, in some climates it makes sense for camo color.
Yeah, I am surprised it's not so common actually in spiders for the reason you mentioned š·ļø
Oh badass! Need to get some of those for my little bug collectors.
I can mail you one. No guarantee it will survive the trip, lmao
Prolly cheaper to get me one too š
I was jokingly reffering to the spider but you probably meant the tool. It was something like 1 usd from Temu š
Lmao, can send both š

He's only three, but no better time to start him on the path.
Fascinating creature. I looked up info (which you probably already know) and came across this site, which has a lot of information about different kinds of huntsman spiders.
"But dadddd, I wanna squish it" š

Looks like your son got the fascination for exotic creatures from his dad's Genes
Haha. True š
So cool that your son now has a proper instrument to catch and release the spiders. We also do that, but by hand, and this mantid was blown out of the granadilla fence, so I put it into our "Jacob's Ladder" bush.
The green color matches your son's green spider, and I am glad that you guys are teaching him to catch and release.

My spider would make a nice snack for your mantis lmao
Shame, yes, the mantis will be no match for your spider !LOL

It's always nice to see that he is interested in things. I don't think I like Spiders that much are definitely interesting insects and I am glad that its not one of those poisonous versions.
Thankfully not many poisonous critters here!
