Around 150 BC. Polybius, a historian and one of the most important figures of ancient Greece, perfected a communication system that has been called "Polybius' chess" or "Polybius' square". It was a system for communicating at a distance, a kind of rudimentary telegraph using torches.

Polybius designed a board with 5 rows by 5 columns and a total of 25 squares containing all the letters of the Greek alphabet. Thus each letter could be identified by its position in a given column and row or, in other words, by its coordinates. Later, torches were used to indicate positions on the board in order to communicate basic words from a distance. This method of communication was used above all to warn of fires and also, although to a lesser extent, for communications in war. It is arguably one of the earliest cryptographic systems in history.

Many centuries later, at the end of the 18th century, Charles Barbier, a French military man who lived through the French Revolution and the beginning of the Napoleonic wars, became obsessed with devising a method for soldiers and officers to communicate in the trenches at night without emitting noises and sounds and to prevent enemy troops from discovering their position. He took Polybius' chess as a reference and created a chessboard with 6 rows by 6 columns containing a series of dots that corresponded to the letters of the French alphabet. Thus, each letter could be represented by a certain combination that varied between 2 and 12 points. The combinations of dots needed to construct the message were then punched out of cardboard. These dots were in relief and could be identified by running the fingertips over the surface of the board. Charles Barbier defined his invention as a system of night writing, which he called "sonography".

This system was rather complicated for the troops to learn as it required many combinations of dots to represent a single word and was not successful. However, Barbier was convinced of its usefulness and years later presented it to a school for blind children. Until then, the system used for reading by the blind was the use of Latin letters in relief, which was quite complicated to use because the Latin alphabet was made up of letters that combined straight lines with curves. As chance would have it, among the pupils was a 12-year-old boy called Louis Braille who, based on Barbier's idea, simplified his system by reducing the number of rows and cells and reducing the combination of dots to groups of a maximum of 6 raised dots, making it easier to learn and understand.

Despite initial opposition from the educational community, the Braille method has been the official method of learning, reading and writing for blind people since 1878.
