[ENG/ESP]. A trip along the Almendares River for an environmental impact study

This weekend we completed a series of projects in Havana's Metropolitan Park. In previous projects, I have explained my role at the Cuban Geological Survey and the missions entrusted to us by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment.

On this occasion, I will talk about the trip along the Almendares River to conduct an environmental impact study of its waters.

Almendares River

The Almendares River is the main hydrological system of the Cuban capital, and its waters play a fundamental role as one of the main sources of water supply for the population, industry, and agriculture.

However, for some time now, we have been tasked with investigating the level of pollution, the sources of pollution in the river, the consequences of this pollution for the population, the vegetation, and the waters of the river itself, in order to determine the necessary actions to be taken to reverse the level of pollution in the river.

There are residential buildings along the riverbanks, and industrial waste, dumped by residents, and other sources of pollution, flow into its waters. All of the above were conclusions from our study, in which we recommend the actions that should be taken in the river to reverse the current situation.

A Water Adventure

We arrived at the entrance to Havana's Metropolitan Park and from there we moved to the Almendares River. On the way to the river and at the site itself, we took our cell phones to take photographs that would be useful for our subsequent work and to support our scientific criteria and conclusions with the images taken.

In my case, the photographs were also intended to show our entire adventure to community members so they could appreciate for themselves everything we accomplished on our adventure.

As you can see, the predominant color is green, and there are several wonderful views of the river.

We crossed the iron bridge, which is crossed by numerous cars, motorcycles, and other motor vehicles.

We met with local residents to learn their impressions of the river, its importance to them, and other elements of interest to our research.

We arrived at the docking place for small boats that navigate the river to learn about the measures taken by their owners to protect the waters of the Almendares River and the entire ecosystem.

Around 7 p.m., we decided to return home after gathering all the necessary information and taking the photos that would allow us to give graphic meaning to our research.

In my case, I couldn't resist taking some photos of the river, at a time when the daylight was receding and the blanket of night was beginning to cover the entire surface of the river.

Another wonderful field trip, where work took a backseat as we enjoyed ourselves, had fun, and accomplished our project activities.

Una introducción necesaria

Este fin de semana terminamos una serie de trabajos en el Parque Metropolitano de La Habana. En trabajos anteriores he explicado mi función en el Servicio Geológico de Cuba y las misiones que nos encarga el ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente.

En esta ocasión hablaré del viaje realizado por el río Almendares, para hacer un estudio de impacto ambiental de las aguas del río.

Espero que me acompañen en este viaje de trabajo y conocimiento.

Río Almendares

El río Almendares es el principal sistema hidrológico de la capital cubana y sus aguas tienen un papel fundamental porque es una de las fuentes principales de abasto de agua a la población, la industria y la agricultura.

Sin embargo, desde hace algún tiempo se nos dio la misión de investigar el nivel de contaminación, las fuentes contaminantes del río, las consecuencias de esta contaminación para la población, la vegetación y las aguas del propio río, para determinar las acciones a seguir, con el objetivo de revertir el nivel de contaminación del río.

En las márgenes del río hay construcciones de viviendas y a sus aguas van a parar desechos industriales, de los que vierten los vecinos y de otras fuentes contaminantes. Todo lo anterior fueron conclusiones de nuestro estudio, en las que recomendamos las acciones que deben acometer en el río, para revertir la situación actual del río.

Una aventura acuífera

Llegamos a la entrada del Parque Metropolitano de La Habana y de allí nos trasladamos al río Almendares. De camino al río y en el propio lugar, nos acompañamos de nuestros celulares para tomar fotografías que nos servirían para nuestro trabajo posterior y poder acompañar nuestros criterios científicos y las conclusiones con las imágenes tomadas.

En mi caso, las fotografías también tenían el objetivo de poder mostrar toda nuestra aventura a los miembros de la comunidad y que puedan apreciar por ustedes mismos todo lo que hicimos en nuestra aventura.

Como pueden apreciar, el color predominante es el verde y hay varias vistas del río que son maravillosas.

Pasamos por el puente de hierro por el que pasan numerosos autos, motos y otros vehículos a motor.

Compartimos con vecinos del lugar, para conocer sus impresiones sobre el río, la importancia que tiene para ellos y otros elementos de interés para nuestra investigación.

Llegamos al lugar donde atracan los barcos pequeños que transitan por las aguas del río, para conocer de las medidas tomadas por sus dueños para proteger las aguas del río Almendares y todo el ecosistema del lugar.

Sobre las 7 de la noche decidimos retirarnos para nuestros hogares, luego de recopilar toda la información necesaria y tirar las fotos que nos permitirían darle sentido gráfico a nuestra investigación.

En mi caso, no pude resistirme a tirarle unas fotos al río, en un instante en el que la luz del día se estaba retirando y el manto de la noche comenzaba a ocupar toda la superficie del río.

Un comentario final

Otro viaje de campo maravilloso, en el que el trabajo pasó a un segundo plano porque disfrutamos, nos divertimos y cumplimos con las actividades de nuestro proyecto.
