General Sciences Library of Ho Chi Minh City

Still on the subject of the day I spent in Ho Chi Minh City—which was also my last day in Vietnam. Do you know what else I stumbled upon? Yeeah… A LIBRARY. I’d initially thought it was a stately building, like a government office, and it turned out to be exactly that—but it’s actually used as a library, specifically the General Sciences Library of Ho Chi Minh City.

As usual, the energy of the books seemed to draw me in automatically, so I headed straight for the entrance, even though I wasn’t actually sure if it was really open to foreigners. As I climbed the stairs in the main lobby, I immediately spotted the rules displayed there, including: You must have a membership card to borrow books or similar items, dress modestly, keep quiet and respect other visitors, register first to borrow books, do not cut or tear pages from books, do not alter or rearrange anything already organised within the library, no food or drink is allowed—only in bottles or tumblers, no smoking, no entry to the library if intoxicated or making a noise, that sort of thing. Very standard rules.

As the first rule requires a membership card, we were about to leave, but my friend went to the registration desk and asked the staff on duty if we could have a look around? And it turned out they allowed us to, but… we were only permitted to look around on the ground floor, as access to the first floor requires a membership card; in the end, I didn’t mind that.

The first floor is used solely as a study area, so many visitors were busy with their laptops. There were plenty of chairs with power sockets provided. On my way to the study area, I saw a row of children’s paintings displayed on plain shirts. They all looked bright, warm, innocent, and full of love. What I love about children’s artwork is that they’re still honest in their observations and judgements; they haven’t yet been tainted by the worries of adults, so it’s no surprise that all these pieces are wonderful.

The room was so quiet, I even wondered if they were breathing? Lol. They were so engrossed in their own tasks.

Aside from the study room, I forgot to tell you that in the courtyard, there are plenty of seats provided. There are also very shady trees; it’s very comfortable if you just want to hang out in the courtyard for a moment to rest, or have a snack. I saw some visitors eating and drinking in the courtyard area.
