The Impending Dangers of AI

Global health pandemics can wipe out millions of people in a matter of days. A pandemic like the flu in 1918 which claimed 20-50 million lives and others like Covid-19 which claimed millions of lives are all results of deadly viruses which eventually claimed lives. Are you aware that viruses can be created too? Yes viruses can be genetically engineered

AI is a wonderful innovation I must say. It has helped me quite a number of times, especially in my day job when I need something done as soon as possible like typing an SOP for a project. All I need to do is provide information about the project and viola! It’s at my fingertips. Many creators have now began to use AI for various things like content writing and now, it’s a war between AI generated articles and real people’s thoughts. AI can also be used in healthcare to develop vaccines and treatment for diseases which pose as a threat to global health.

But what if AI were to turn against humanity

Or rather, what if an evil villain gets to use the power of AI to develop something that could destroy the world. Since you do not need any special education to use AI. Recently, Kevin Esvelt, a biosecurity expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, recently asked non-scientist students to create a virus with the help of ChatGPT and they succeeded in getting 4 potential pathogen suggestions from the chatbot, provided how they could be produced and everything they needed to create these ‘deadly’ viruses.

I must say, the wealth of information embedded in AI makes many people’s work less tedious. However, I think there’s should be a way to monitor the information accessible through AI especially the kind that pose as a potential threat in the future.

I believe AI is doing more harm than the good we might think of
