Ever wondered the use of Normal Saline Drips?

you'll always see a common type of fluid called normal saline being used on patients in hospitals. This solution is made up of water and sodium chloride (salt) in specific amounts and serves an important purpose in patient care. I remember when I had an accident some years ago and I was crying desperately for water, my mom was told not to give me water and I thought the doctors were just being mean, that was not the case. Even though It may seem that giving water to someone who is thirsty would be the best way to hydrate them, in the case of accident patients, normal saline is actually better and water could be dangerous.

Normal saline is designed to have the same electrolyte composition as the fluid in our blood. Electrolytes are important substances that help our cells function properly, and regulate the balance of fluids in our bodies, and support many important processes. By giving accident patients normal saline through an IV (intravenous) drip, healthcare providers can help restore the body's fluid levels and prevent dehydration. Water alone doesn't have the necessary electrolytes, so it could disrupt these delicate balances in the body and even potentially cause harm.

Accident patients often lose a lot of fluid due to bleeding, sweating, or other injuries. Normal saline has the same concentration as the fluids in our bodies and hence it is an “isotonic” solution. This makes it a safe and effective way to restore fluid volume and prevent dehydration. Water, on the other hand, doesn't have the necessary electrolytes and could dilute the existing electrolyte concentrations in the body, leading to imbalances and complications.

Another reason why normal saline is used in hospitals is because it is compatible with different medications and treatments. Water doesn't have the same properties as our blood plasma, therefmore, using it intravenously may interfere with the effectiveness or safety of medications or other therapies. Normal saline provides a standardized and compatible solution that healthcare professionals can use alongside other treatments.

One more important thing about normal saline is that it helps support the circulatory system. Accident patients often need to have their fluids replenished to maintain good blood circulation and keep their organs working properly. Normal saline helps to restore blood volume, since it is sent directly to the blood stream am has the same properties as our plasma, so that vital organs get the oxygen and nutrients they need to function well. Water might make you feel less thirsty at first, but it doesn't have the essential components needed to support your circulatory system effectively. The balanced electrolytes in normal saline are important in maintaining blood pressure, preventing shock, and keeping the body stable.

So, even though it might seem like water is the obvious choice for rehydration, normal saline is a much better option for accident patients. It helps balance electrolytes, ensures compatibility with other treatments, and supports the circulatory system. By using normal saline, healthcare providers can provide the best care and help patients recover more effectively.
