Nile Rodgers was born in New York, New York. By 1952 he had become a prominent guitarist. After studying classical music and jazz, he worked as a session musician at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, the mecca of black music in New York. Bernard Edwards was born that year (1952) in Greenville, North Carolina. He became one of the best bassists and even led many musicians to decide to play bass instead of guitar. One of them was John Taylor of the famous 80's band Duran Duran.

His playing was unmistakable and that can be seen in songs like “Good Time”, the perfect song to cheer you up on a bad day. Sadly, Bernard died at the age of 43. On April 18, 1996, Nile Rodgers was found dead in a Tokyo hotel room by his friend. The night before, Bernard had complained of severe abdominal pain and a strange fever. He died in bed of severe pneumonia. But the memory of him and the music of him remain and will live forever!

Neil and Bernard met in 1972 when they were both in the band Big Apple. In 1977, Walter Murphy and the Big Apple scored a number one hit with "Beethoven's Fifth," which later appeared on the great Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (Can You Forget Tony Manero's Fighters). Inspired by this success, they decided to leave the group and form Chic.

They were joined by former Labelle drummer Tony Thompson and brought in Norma Jean Wright and Alpha Anderson on vocals. The band recorded a demo, "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)", but it received no attention. Finally, in late 1977, Atlantic Records signed them and they released a single that sold a million copies in its first month. According to Rogers, the first single was the key to the rest of his career. It was the first song that was allowed to be recorded with sub-bass sound.

Before this song, all bass below 60Hz had been removed during the recording process, but in this case Neil and Bernard decided to keep it. Upon entering the club, you can hear and feel the vibrations from the speakers radiating through your body, along with the sound of Rogers' bass. It was completely new at the time, but today we can see it in any dancehall while listening to the latest in electronic music.
