The Eranos Circle // O Círculo de Eranos

Recently, studying a little of Jung's life I discovered the Eranos group and was fascinated by the idea. Around 1933 a group of intellectuals of the time decided to start meeting to discuss in depth and detail issues involving Psychology, Philosophy, Religions, Anthropology, Sociology and Symbology, both Eastern and Western. As far as I could ascertain, the system was suggested by the spiritualist and theosophist Olga Froebe-Kapteyn, who gave up her house in Ascona in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Maggiore for such meetings. The name of the group was suggested by another participating intellectual scholar, Rudolf Otto, theologian and philosopher, who used a derivation of the Greek concept of collective banquets that were independent of a main host and everyone brought their "food" to share.

Needless to say, such meetings in the Eranos group were most likely food for a universe of content that came out of there in each of the countless minds that went through such experiences. The meetings lasted eight days and the collective experience allowed an innate fermentation of ideas and points to be discussed. Each member had the possibility to bring up a topic of their choice for an average of two hours, and then it was dissected and debated among the participating members. During this time everyone involved also had a collective experience of life in Olga's house, reveling in the incredible scenery and effervescent sphere of erudition caused by so many avant-garde intellectuals in the same environment. The Eranos group lasted more than seventy years and certainly looked at all kinds of issues within the most sought-after topics of scholars, it is worth remembering that there was an implicit interest in studying mainly spiritual and religious, symbolic and mythological issues, topics that were practically the daily fuel of some of the renowned members, such as Carl Gustav Jung and Joseph Campbell.

When reading the list of part of the active members of the Eranos group I realized that I know very little of this spiritual intellectual school and that if sometimes I am already drowned in incredible knowledge coming from Campbell and Jung, I imagine then to dwell on this whole list of scholarly people who passed through the group. I leave here the names of some (those I found reference by wikipedia) and who knows in the future I will give a greater emphasis on some of them separately in other posts:

Recentemente, estudando um pouco da vida de Jung descobri o grupo de Eranos e fiquei fascinado pela ideia. Por volta de 1933 um grupo de intelectuais da época decidiram começar a se encontrar para discutir de forma profunda e detalhada questões que envolviam Psicologia, Filosofia, Religiões, Antropologia, Sociologia e Simbologia, tanto orientais quanto ocidentais. Até onde pude constatar, o sistema foi sugerido pela espiritualista e teosofista Olga Froebe-Kapteyn, que cedeu sua casa em Ascona na Suíça, à beira do Lago Maggiore para tais reuniões. O nome do grupo foi sugerido por outro estudioso intelectual participante, Rudolf Otto, teólogo e filósofo, que utilizou uma derivação do conceito grego dos banquetes coletivos que independiam de um anfitrião principal e todos traziam seu "alimento" para compartilhar.

Não é preciso dizer que muito provavelmente tais reuniões no grupo de Eranos foi alimento para um universo de conteúdo que dali saiu em cada uma das inúmeras mentes que passaram por tais vivências. As reuniões duravam oito dias e a vivência coletiva permitia uma fermentação inata de ideias e pontos a serem discutidos. Cada membro tinha a possibilidade de trazer um tema de sua preferência à tona por em média duas horas, para depois o mesmo ser dissecado e debatido entre os membros participantes. Durante esse tempo todos os envolvidos tinham ainda uma experiência coletiva de vida na casa de Olga, deleitando-se com uma paisagem incrível e uma esfera de erudição efervescente causada por tantos intelectuais avant-garde num mesmo ambiente. O grupo de Eranos durou mais de setenta anos e certamente debruçou-se sobre todo tipo de questão dentro dos temas mais procurados pelos estudiosos, vale lembrar que havia um interesse implícito em estudar principalmente questões espirituais e religiosas, simbólicas e mitológicas, temas que eram praticamente o combustível diário de alguns dos renomados membros, como Carl Gustav Jung e Joseph Campbell.

Ao ler a lista de parte dos membros ativos do grupo de Eranos acabei percebendo que conheço muito pouco dessa escola intelectual espiritual e que se as vezes já me pego afogado em conhecimento incrível advindo de Campbell e Jung, imagino então debruçar-me sobre toda essa lista de gente estudiosa que passou pelo grupo.
