In general, I could say that part of me didn't want to know about Elliot Rodger, but there is a kind of curiosity about the psyche of certain types of individuals who coexist with more "normal" people (and it's essential here to put quotation marks in normal, because as we well know, normality is relative and subjective and, more importantly, I am convinced that all human beings suffer from mental disorders to a greater or lesser degree), and in particular that social group responsible for terrible attacks on groups of people, what they call "mass shooters". I was once a completely angry student and I understand the social pressure that leads unbalanced people to take completely wrong and disturbing actions, but this is where the distinction is made between social disorders and so-called "psychopaths" (a term that is no longer used today).

I ended up falling into the Elliot Rodger theme by accident, watching an iceberg video of "disturbing literature" and his autobiography/manifesto was there in one of the lowest layers of the iceberg. I ended up reading very little about him and went straight to a video (audiobook) narrated by himself, with excellent diction, where he breaks down his life from birth to the day he finished writing and set out on a massacre against an idealizing paranoia that couldn't even be tangible. From the outset, his target was a concept, a behavioral pattern, not a person. This model is very similar to the targets of so many killers of this type of massacre (such as those in schools in general). It is known that in 95% of cases the person has been through situations of extreme social discomfort, bullying, emotional torture and so on, and this has devastating repercussions for themselves and subsequently for everyone else affected by such acts. In Rodger's case, his supposed "manifesto" was a huge hate letter to women for having been (in his words) belittled, offended and excluded from the "game of sexuality and love". Rodger made it clear right up to his last video that probably the biggest reason for his revolt was that he was going to die a virgin.

Here we have the most dangerous culmination of the concept of the "Incel", the involuntary celibate. An "adjective" that became popular on the internet a few years ago, but which has been perpetuated in this type of individual for years and brings a discomfort that is too complex for the social study of our current culture. Rodgers was indeed a handsome man, very intelligent, careful in his self-care, and the fact that he knew all this made him even more agonized: -Why wasn't this enough to attract girls to him? Why had he never managed to date or befriend a girl? What was wrong? By throwing all the locus of control to the outside and blaming the "world around him" for being unfair to him, a hurt and offended character is formed, ready to strike back. The issue is much more complex than that and we know that there are "incels" all over the internet and there are only a few who end up wandering into a psychotic situation of "revenge" and seeking "justice" in a completely absurd act of murdering random people in an externalized representation of their ghosts.

Rodger ended the lives of six people and injured fourteen more. Random people who didn't even know him. Rodger had clear traits of sociopathy since his pre-teen years and was diagnosed with mild autism. He denied psychiatric care very early on, claiming that the medication was not good for him. Society has never really been prepared to deal with people like Rodger and puberty and the adolescent social universe is like gunpowder for this type of incident. There are not a few cases (which continue and continue to happen) and yet it is so difficult to understand how we could do differently to avoid such tragedies and how to treat such people. De forma geral eu poderia dizer que parte de mim não queria saber sobre Elliot Rodger, mas existe uma espécie de curiosidade à respeito da psique de determinados tipos de indivíduos que coexistem com as pessoas mais "normais" (e é fundamental aqui colocar aspas no normais, por que como bem sabemos a normalidade é relativa e subjetiva e mais importante que isso: tenho convicção que todos os seres humanos padecem de distúrbios mentais em maior ou menor grau), e em especial essa fatia social responsável por terríveis ataques a grupos de pessoas, o que no inglês chamam de "mass shooter". Eu já fui um estudante completamente revoltado e compreendo a pressão social que leva pessoas desequilibradas a tomarem atitudes completamente erradas e perturbadoras mas aqui é que distingue-se a delimitação entre os transtornos sociais e os chamados "psicopatas" (termo inclusive que já está em desuso atualmente).

Acabei caindo no tema Elliot Rodger sem querer, assistindo um vídeo iceberg de "disturbing literature" e a autobiografia/manifesto dele estava lá numa das camadas mais baixas do iceberg. Acabei lendo pouquissimo sobre ele e fui direto para um vídeo (audiobook) narrado por ele mesmo, com ótima dicção onde desmembra sua vida do nascimento até o dia em que finalizou suas escritas e partiu para um massacre contra uma paranoia idealizatória que nem de fato poderia ser palpável. Desde o começo seu alvo era um conceito, um padrão comportamental e não uma pessoa. Tal modelo assemelha-se muito aos alvos de tantos e tantos assassinos desse tipo de massacre (como os de escolas em geral). Sabe-se que em 95% dos casos a pessoa passou por situações de extremo desconforto social, bullying, tortura emocional e assim por diante e isso repercute de uma forma devastadora para si mesmo e em sequencia para todos os demais acometidos por tais atos. No caso de Rodger, seu suposto "manifesto" era uma imensa carta de ódio às mulheres por ter sido (segundo suas palavras) menosprezado, ofendido e excluído do "jogo da sexualidade e do amor". Rodger deixou claro até seu último vídeo que provavelmente o maior motivo de sua revolta é que ele iria morrer virgem.

Temos aqui o ápice perigosíssimo do conceito do "Incel" o celibatário involuntário. Um "adjetivo" que se popularizou na internet há alguns anos mas que já perpetuava-se nesse tipo de indivíduo há anos e traz um desconforto complexo demais para o estudo social de nossa cultura atual. Rodgers de fato era um homem de feição bonita, muito inteligente, cuidadoso em seu auto-cuidado, e o fato de saber de tudo isso o deixava mais agoniado ainda: -Por que isso não era o suficiente para atrair garotas para si? Por que nunca conseguiu namorar ou ter uma amizade feminina? O que havia de errado? Ao jogar todo o lócus de controle para o externo e culpar o "mundo ao seu redor" por ser injusto com ele, forma-se aí um personagem magoado e ofendido, pronto para revidar. O tema é muito mais complexo que isso e sabemos que existem "incels" por toda a internet e são poucos que acabam debandando para uma situação psicótica de "vingança" e busca por "justiça" em um ato completamente absurdo de assassinar pessoas aleatórias numa representação externalizada de seus fantasmas.

Rodger acabou com a vida de seis pessoas e feriu mais quatorze. Pessoas aleatórias que nem mesmo o conheciam. Rodger tinha traços de sociopatia nítidos desde a pré-adolescência e era diagnosticado com autismo leve, muito cedo negou cuidados psiquiátricos alegando que os medicamentos não lhe faziam bem. A sociedade nunca esteve de fato preparada para lidar com pessoas como Rodger e a puberdade e o universo social adolescente é como pólvora para esse tipo de incidente. Não são poucos os casos (que continuam e continuam acontecendo) e ainda assim, é tão difícil entender como poderiamos fazer diferente para evitar tais tragédias e como tratar tais pessoas.
