Hive: An AI Data Platform

We see a lot of interesting things taking place of late with both Reddit and Twitter. The decisions, on the surface, appear to pit the users with the owners. It is nothing new when it comes to these platforms. However, these seem to be counterintuitive.

It also has the user bases up in arms.

We first had Reddit jacking the API fees and cancelling third party apps. It was something that really upset the users to the point that many were filling the different sub-Reddits with NSFW content. This would instantly kill the ad revenue.

Then we saw Elon Musk and Twitter placing a restriction on the number of threads that could be viewed. We again saw the user base go over the edge, believing that Elon was killing Twitter.

So what is going on? Are they intent on destroying their applications and driving their users away?

The answer is no. Instead, this is all tied to artificial intelligence. We see the hunt for data moving to another level.

Source

Data Centers

Social media platforms are data centers. An application like Twitter has 15 years of content that was posted. This is very valuable when feeding machine learning engines.

It appears that these entities are also targets. With so much interest in training AI systems, especially after the success of ChatGPT, it seems everyone is hunting for data. This means that Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites are destination.

What is likely upsetting these entities is when people target the data without paying. After all, these technology companies consider it as their property. We will leave aside the fact it was created by the user base. They view it as on their servers, hence they own it. Ultimately, this will be one of the downfalls of Web 2.0, but that is another issue.

The bottom line is these corporations view the data as their property. Since others are taking off the Internet without compensation, they are going to take counter measures to stop it.

This is what we see happening.

Hive Data

People on Hive have a choice. Each time we add anything to centralize social media, we are enriching the overlords. Zuckerberg and Musk are well aware of the value this holds. Ultimately, people still are feeding the beast.

On Hive, it is a bit different. The database is not in the control of any single person or entity. There are a number of different APIs set up. In fact, anyone, with the skill, is free to put one online. There is no limitations to that.

Web 3.0, at this point, is not about owning one's data. In reality, nobody owns it. This is in the wild. Once it is placed on blockchain, it is immutable and anyone can access it. This is much different, though, from what takes place on the centralized servers.

Since what is on blockchain is available for all, could Hive become an epicenter for training data. While not as large as the other entities, the database was filled over 7 years. There is a built-in trove of articles and information that could be fed into machine learning engines.

Of course, as more is added on a daily basis, the amount of data simply increases, enhancing the value to the training models. This is a point that gets overlooked.

Skynet

Many still fear the Skynet scenario from The Terminator film. While the future of AI and humanity is certainly in question, the idea of one company creating it all is unlikely.

However, if we look at this from the data perspective, the likelihood increases based upon who has access to the training. Here is where the support of Web 2.0 platforms goes counter to opening things up.

Only by developing robust databases like Hive can we ensure that data for all companies exists. Here is where truly decentralized blockchains provide a role. Since nobody is in control of the data, it is available for all to use.

This means that projects utilizing machine learning models have access to data, something the traditional social media companies are going to restrict. Here is one way to, perhaps, prevent a Skynet scenario. As more software is developed, the idea of one dominating totally decreases. Of course, at some point, all the AI could get together and wipe us out, but that is a different matter.

Bit By Bit

Here is the kicker when it comes to Web 3.0:

Many in cryptocurrency do not keep their money in banks. There are a variety of reasons for this. However, one of the central ideas is to stop feeding the beast. By keeping value in cryptocurrency as opposed to in a bank, we reduce the power they have, even if ever so slightly.

In other words, each transaction occurring in cryptocurrency means one less for the present system. This is a game of attrition and our role is to remove as much as we can.

The same holds true for social media. Each piece of data posted on a network like Hive means less for the centralized systems. This can be an article, comment, or image (although the latter doesn't reside on-chain). Projects like IPFS can be a great ally in this. The point is to drain the system with each move we make.

We have to keep in mind the value of a decentralized database for the world to use. As recent events show, the intention is for the biggest technology companies to control the data others have access to.

This is becoming a larger problem as AI training models become more prevalent.

It see the utility of Hive is growing.

Excellent analysis that you have shared with us in this article. Nothing in these great transnationals of world communication happens at will, nor as a result of a random decision. Take this another type of approach. Thank you!!!

Yeah we have to be careful with this. If we allow mega corporations to be the only game in town, this might not work out so well.

Of course, we cannot overlook governments either.

Neither is a favorable option for humanity in my opinion.

Elon is a ideal for new generation as he supports crypto and keep us interested in Twitter first blue tick and now limited use of Twitter

I have not stored any money in bank for few years I keep cash or bitcoin

I am not sure how much he supports crypto. Elon is a troll so we have to be careful with him.

For his talk of DOGE, it might turn out he had none. We will see what the lawsuit reveals.

NFT worlds, an important metaverse project, relied on Minecraft APIs. The idea was to create a web3 ecosystem using the Minecraft infrastructure. After all, there was a large community that could develop on Minecraft. Microsoft, the owner of Minecraft, initially remained silent on this initiative but soon announced that it would not allow its infrastructure to be used in this way. NFT Worlds is now writing its own code. Open-source ecosystems will become truly functional thanks to crypto.

Thanks for that input. It doesnt surprise me. We have to keep pushing this concept at every level. Open source, decentralized and distributed have to be more than just buzzwords.

Hive is really different, I mean it's web 3, not limited to some group of individuals and the database is just indescribable...... zukerberg and Elon understands just how concrete stuffs here are when linked on social media

The fact it stores any text makes Hive different.

Elon and Zuck both know the value of data. That is not something they overlook.

For all intents and purposes, both Zuckerberg (with Meta) and Musk (with Twitter), are marketing with our data. Kudos to their intelligence and a little less to our naiveté!
By starting to use Hive or any blog on decentralized blockchain, no one can profit with our data because it is public and searchable.
Centralized 0 decentralized 1
However, AI remains a "problem" in that on the blockchain it could find a gold mine relative to the interpretation of data and, absurdly, it could also create an algorithm that able to reproduce human consciousness, having at its disposal all possible facets of the authors.
Only time will tell whether machines can replace humans!

That is true but the case could be the same with FB's database. That company is designing their algos to go through the near 2 decades of data. And that is a much bigger gold mine.

I think it wouldn't help for the creation of data to serve people if the use of the data aren't pay to refill with new data. As AI is needs to be empower with data.

The data industry is valued in the league of the billions. Its the primary reason why we've transitioned from Web 1.0 to 2.0. Its scary to think about, but I think that this industry is going to experience a dramatic change, I would almost call it a paradigm shift, towards feeding data to increasingly-specializing AI models instead of transforming this data into something that targets the user back, in the form of an ad for example.

However, I can't shake off the feeling that restricting users or otherwise pissing them off is extremely counterintuitive. They aren't providing an essential, irreplaceable service. If users don't like it on one platform, there is always an alternative. Users jumping ship means less content, and therefore less data is produced which shrinks the company's bottom line. It's not in their best interest to do that.

But there is no way to do what they intend to do without pissing users off. It's inevitable.

I agree about the users jumping ship would be a problem. But the real question is will they? It seems like there are a lot who talk about it but most end up back on the platforms in a short time.

Plus isnt the alternative just another dictator. Does anyone think Dorsey is not going to do the same thing with his project. Or any of them?

I think Dorsey is a pretty tame "dictator" compared to Elon Musk. Dorsey was extremely slow and sluggish on the feature rollout during his tenure, I doubt he would've had the confidence in him to piss users off. He values the user experience more than anything else. He didn't care much for profit during the founding of twitter.

I think training AI models will become more expensive when web2 social media platforms start protecting their data from being accessed by AI machines. Luckily, there are better alternatives on web3 to access on build on. This also prevents the monopolization of data.

Funnily enough I just read today that a company called Hive is providing AI services to classify content on social sites. It seems the new Bluesky one from the Twtr founders is using it. People are concerned that it is not explicit that their data is being used in this way, but the 'AI' companies will suck in anything they can find. We cannot stop them exploiting our Hive.

Yeah. At least our Hive is there for anyone to use, not just a select company or two.

It is going to get very interesting. We are going to see the value of Hive (our) in this regard in the future. I believe people are going to realize the need for an open database that humanity can access.

I wouldnt be surprised if Reddit and Twitter are just the start. Why wouldnt all of Web 2 follow suit? They all have the same motivation: to get paid on the data.

at some point, all the AI could get together and wipe us out, but that is a different matter.

I'm not entirely sure it would want to? Even if it had robots and didn't need us it might find value in humanity?
