Won't be Missed

While it was a small sample size of a few thousand, it was pretty interesting to hear that 20% of Gen-Zers have given up on relationships with humans in favour of relationships with AIs. I don't know how accurate it is, but hey - even if it is 5%, that is still incredibly high, isn't it?

WTF is wrong with people today ...

I have oft been told I focus too much on the negatives of society, but the fact is that we are all part and parcel of the same environment and we are all affected by each other. For example, victims of crime aren't limited to the suburbs of criminals, it travels. Our social behaviours travel too, as does the culture and the repercussions. We can try to insulate ourselves, but at the end of the day - we are all exposed to the worst of us.

But I do get it, because we are geared to see what we pay attention to, which means the more we see of it, the more we will see of it, and I see a lot of negatives in the world today. I should definitely find some more sources of beauty and awesomeness to balance the scales a bit, but I feel it is getting harder and harder to find those bright points. Is it because there are less of them, are they disappearing, or is it just because I look past them?

While I used to be the town optimist, these days I find optimists quite delusional, considering the trajectory the world is taking. I don't see a lot of positive gain happening in the things that actually matter, because the majority of resources we have available are directed in to activities that do not seed positive crops. We reap what we sow and what we are sowing is leading us into changes that at least at this point, look like they are going to cause a lot of suffering. And the more people suffer, the less people care.

I have a theory that I have voiced before where I believe that the lower the value of the people of a country, the more likely that country will be attacked. Why I think this is because a country has resources and if the value of the people is as low as the value of the land, then it can be attacked and the people lost, without losing the value of the land. However, if the value of the people is much higher than the value of the land resources, then attacking the country will mean losing the majority of the value. That is an oversimplification, but think it through a bit.

But, with the changes in technology, humans are being devalued. We are becoming increasingly useless economically, but also socially. This means that even if we had a technological utopia that could provide for us all, we are not adding any value in any other areas. Maybe we could change the course we are on, but currently, people are devaluing themselves by choice, as they push away from human connection and relationships in favour of the sanitized world of digital connection.

The less connected, the less missed.

Ever thought about that? I have. For instance, people in a workplace who are fully remote can get fired, and no one really even notices that they are gone. Their tasks just change hands, or often today, gets automated by an AI. But it is the same for many people where over the last few decades someone can die in their apartment alone, and no one misses them enough to find them for months. And I see the direction of many people like those who are choosing AI relationships heading down the same path. They can disappear, and they won't be missed. They could be murdered and buried in a shallow grave, and no one would notice they are gone at all.

Quite a morbid portrayal.

But if you think about how much of society operates today, many people can be a regular patron of a particular restaurant, but have never set a foot inside, met a waitperson, or seen another customer, because they order through an app and have it delivered to their door. Same with their shopping, and their clothing, and whatever else they order. These people are spending money, but they aren't creating connections. They have devalued themselves as a member of the community, and reduced themselves to the value of their demand. That value can disappear, but it is just a number on the spreadsheet, no human attached to it.

An interesting quote to reflect on, considering that in order to save our own feelings, we are disconnecting from each other in so many ways that we will soon no longer be able to make an one else feel anything, because we have no contact with them. It is happening at all levels too, with the depth of relationships shallowing, as people turn to their screens, rather than looking into each other's eyes. And because we are disconnecting, e become less caring about others anyway, meaning we will more likely make them feel bad, and they make us feel bad - which will provide the evidence and reason for further disconnection.

We have screwed society.
Now we are screwing robots.

We won't be missed.

It's crazy how much mental space we waste on habits or things we think matter for us, only to realize later we're way better off without them. Letting go really is peaceful, but what if we made wrong decisions?
Everything is acceptable unless the thing isn't harmful to ourselves and to others.

The central concern strikes me as valid: a society with fewer face-to-face connections may lead to people feeling more isolated and, consequently, less visible to others. But I think it is worth distinguishing between two issues. The fact that someone uses AI for companionship does not necessarily mean that they have ceased to value human relationships; in some cases, it may be a symptom of loneliness, anxiety or a lack of alternatives, rather than the cause of isolation.

That's true. That is to say AI isn't the main problem, the problem is most humans have learn to live without their fellows. But that's insane and I believe there are many things that might lead to this act of theirs.

I would also treat that 20 per cent with caution, as we do not know the sample size, the exact question asked, or how ‘relationship’ was defined. Even so, even if the actual percentage were much lower, the trend is worth noting.

In fact, the world is going against what we were told as kids. I may not know why but I can say that too much of exposure and education play a role in it negative transgression.

While the world is moving into a whole, a war zone. I wish I was told about the challenges of life earlier, I would have been one step ahead from my thoughts as a kid. But all the same, its also better to learn the hard way.

I understand that human relationships(both romantic and unromantic) are important and can be worth the effort. But the same time just the mare idea that someone could blame me for what happens in her dreams seems like a decent reason to stay single. And being single is better than having relationship with AI.

Not really. People are irrational (though believe they are rational), including you and I. Making a decision out of fear of emotional discomfort is going to lead to all kinds of limitations that take away quality of life.

Your reasons are one that makes people get in a relationship with a robot than humans. But am glad you didn't see AI as a choice. And also sir, I would like you to give relationship ( human) a try, I think Its cool and sometimes it helps, not all humans are the same,(I'm just suggesting).

I think technology can make life more convenient, but convenience doesn't necessarily build meaningful relationships. If we stop meeting people, talking to them and being part of a community, we may eventually become asocial and less important to each other.

I recently had a minor blowout with J about this. Rugged individualism is cool and all but only gets anyone so far. And we're not even that rugged.

AI can put many people's jobs at risk, and this feeling of danger can put pressure on people psychologically, even if they have not been fired.

That line "the less connected, the less missed" hit hard man. We trade real human friction for pure convenience, but then wonder why everyone feels so invisible. If u don't leave a footprint in peoples real lives, of course nobody notices when u disappear

Sometimes ago, I told my friends how AI will take over jobs that is supposed to me made for humans and they were like " nah It's not possible". But as everyday passes, i see more reason and facts that AI is moving in that direction.
Some humans, take AI serious than their fellow humans, I think AI is now doing more than providing help to humans. Some of us are now giving it more assess than required, and I actually think that's bad.

My sister was recently let go from her job. She has been remote since she moved back home a few years ago. They seemed to be fine with it at the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was a small part of the reason. She also said they are working on an AI tool to do a lot of the stuff she was responsible for. In the end, it's probably for the best for her, but it still sucks.

Pretty much sums up the plight of the Palestinians. The West wants that land to help engineer a new canal through Israel to bypass Hormuz. Gaza was directly on the path of least resistance through the Judean desert from Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

This happens to the elderly, when they are no longer relevant or valued as you say. I was perplexed by what you meant by that word until I saw the relationship to how the elderly are seen and priced.

I find that number 20% unbelievable at first, then I remembered that someone here on hive, a gen z-er, was lauding the AI that she spoke to intimately, and how good AI made her feel. They've found so much entertainment and education online, it only makes sense that relationships were not far behind. They devalue themselves with this behavior, unknowingly. Do not know the meaning of value, have allowed themselves to become useless eaters. The zombie apocalypse is here.
