What Do You Know?

HiveBuzz is a project run by @arcange that tracks all kinds of interesting tidbits about an accounts life here on Hive, and back in the day, on the now-unmentionable chain. Yesterday, one of the rarest of badges awarded was distributed.

image.png

Yearly Author

This is the badge for someone who has posted every day of a calendar year, meaning at least 365 times and was awarded to 86 accounts. However, looking at the list, there are also a few automated accounts in that list, so the humans who submitted daily, is likely a fair bit lower than that number. However, when it comes to the activity statistics on an account, I only really look at my own numbers, because I know what has gone into achieving them - and it is far more than many realize.

image.png

I have seven yearly author badges.

And it is good to remind what a "day" is on Hive, because it doesn't matter where you live in the world, the time is the same everywhere.

What's the time?

Hive Time.

To verify your eligibility for the Yearly Author badge and confirm the timing of your post submissions, Hivebuzz references the blockchain's timestamp, which aligns with UTC

Here are a few places you can find out the time - but it aligns with UTC, so you don't have to care too much. Currently, the blockchain is two hours behind local time in Finland.

You can also find out other interesting bits of information from varioss sites, like the circulating HIVE supply,

image.png

For those that don't know, the HIVE supply is not static and grows and retracts depending on what is happening. The numbers are above are the current HIVE and HBD supply which are precise right now, and the third number is the virtual supply, which is if all of the 33M HBD were converted to HIVE right now, it would buy almost 100M HIVE.

You can also find the rewards fund, which is the pool from which all the rewards are issued, whether it be author payouts, curation, or witness payments. This number is in HIVE only and the HBD will be converted from this at time of payment.

image.png

This is where the inflation of HIVE comes from, but it can also be generated in other ways, like through overpriced HBD (it is "meant to be" stable at 1 USD) being converted to HIVE. Howevever, that also allows projects like @hbdstabilizer to fund the Hive Development Fund and keep HBD relatively price balanced.

It has been a while since I have dived into all of the numbers on Hive and have largely stayed out of the backend stuff since my stroke. I used to spend so much time understanding the way it all works, but I feel "out of it" in many ways now, because there are so many developments going on and I just can't keep up. However, I am glad that the development is happening and there are new innovative aspects coming. I am looking forward to seeing what this is going to bring to the ecosystem:

image.png

https://vsc.eco/

I have a lot of reading and catching up to do.

But before that, as I said above, I have seven yearly author badges, which is because @arcange was nice enough to backdate the badges to include past activity. Similarly to the yearly, there are monthly and weekly badges also, and going on me joining Hive January 29, 2017, at 11:42:12 (UTC)

image.png

It has been 95 months, 414 weeks, 2897 days.

image.png

There have been 8 weeks where I missed posting in a day, and 3 months where I missed posting on every day. These all appear in the first few months of me starting on Hive, which is why I can confidently say that I have posted daily for the last 7.5 years on Hive, without fail. I know it is without fail, because everything is recorded on the blockchain faithfully.

However, the reason I wanted to write this article isn't to brag about consistency, or even tell people to be more consistent with their writing because it is good for mental health. It s because, I think that most of the current authors and users on Hive don't spend much time at all understanding how Hive works in the backend and I would predict that many don't know how many ways there are to view the Hive blockchain, or dive into the history of accounts.

For instance, the day my account was created, a transaction was created and stored on the blockchain. Each transaction since has also been stored like posts, comments, votes, account updates, witness changes... and now there are 17,295 pages of transactions.

image.png

I believe that when people get more interested and start exploring the backend of Hive, they also discover that there is a huge amount that they haven't realized, that they might want to ask questions about, and may change the way they think about Hive, and perhaps the way they act on Hive too. Hive is fascinating.

The more you know, the more you grow.
The more you learn, the more you earn.

A lot of people focus on the earnings here, but aren't interested in learning how the ecosystem works. It isn't necessary to know everything, but not even understanding the basics is a poor strategy. I know, because that is what I was like when I started, and it wasn't until I started chatting with people who know a hell of a lot more than me, that I started to "get it" and realized that Hive isn't just a place to write and earn something, it is a place to participate in the future of content and the evolving digital economy.

What do you know?

Thanks for this overview.

It gives some extra motivation for the actual year

It is easier than people seem to make it. But it might be habit.

It is a shame that I did not get another yearly badge. Perhaps that is not very important but it is annoying.

I know less than Jon Snow. But I know who to ask in case I don't know something- you.

I only know the basics!

The most annoying is if you missed it by a day or two, doing nothing useful.

I am not sure whether it is possible to post at least 365 times in a year, definetely not for me :) I would devote much more time to HIVE than today and be much more avtive in real life to find any subject to write about.

Wouldn't being more active in real life be a good thing? :D

You know ;), I joined back in late 2017 / early 2018 and I only know of these things because of smarter guys like you. I do love the refresher as I always find something new or interesting or that I have forgotten. I always treated it like a show I missed that I know I would like. I could go down the rat hole and binge it all or just leave it there for future discovery and focus on the social side of things.

I have probably transacted most days since the beginning with the exception of days spent off grid totally. To be an author every damn day for a single year takes an enviable amount of habit building and discipline. You seriously have done this (except for extraordinary circumstances) for 7 straight years? This blows my mind and makes sense at the same time knowing you.

One of the daily instalments I have followed since the start is #themorningbowl with Hive gypsy @davedickeyyall. Sharing laughs and watching his adventure consistently has been one of my most real connections to the chain.

My measly upvote is barely worth piss in a pot but I occasionally wonder if there is a stat I can check out for the value of thousands of upvotes over the years. Then I wonder who have been my biggest supporters over the years. Then, I. Start to wonder who is behind each of the curation accounts that I have somehow appeared on the radar of for those awesome upvotes.

And that is as close to the rathole as I get. 🐀

Congrats my friend. Your journey and wisdom have been another of my most real connections to the chain. I am privileged to know you.

I could go down the rat hole and binge it all or just leave it there for future discovery and focus on the social side of things.

And it goes through similar phases perhaps. Sometimes in the mood, sometimes not.

@davedickeyyall has come up a couple times in the last few weeks, so now I have to follow :)

Not totally perhaps, but you can look here:

https://hivetasks.com/@zekepickleman

This tells the HP earned, which isn't accurate to dollar amounts by far, but can indicate that a lot has been distributed - especially during the higher prices!

Then I wonder who have been my biggest supporters over the years.

There used to be one for this on Steem by @magicmonk (I think) but it doesn't exist now. Perhaps he is still willing :)

Congratulations on your daily posts for over 7 years. That's rare and shows a regulated lifestyle.

Definitely rare - without being automated at least!

I already missed writing on new years day so it already disqualifies me from the yearly author and knowing my schedule, even making half of the years post will prove to be difficult but I've been doing a decent job on HPUD and HPUM for the past months and my goal was to get all the HPUD and HPUM badge this year.

Congratulations. 7 years is a really long time. It's hard to post almost every day. It takes passion, discipline, talent and dedication. You've dedicated your life to this. You deserve respect.

I hope it isn't a life dedication, but more of a hobby :)

Mmmm what about the hard fork, when the times Blockchain was down during around 2 or three days, this too count.
Guau you come in January,
My account is from June 2017
But my velocity have been doing a little slow than you but I am sure I do my plan to grown.

I think these days were excluded from the count. They are the only days I have missed. I think I didn't have access for two days at that point. I think it was the HF (20/21) that brought in resource credits.

Ok this is a good explanation.
Well but it is a good goals, in my case I loses weeks and some days.

i can't believe anyone (other than an automation service) could post something on hive every day of the year. what a challenge.
even if you were making genuine creative and valuable content and scheduling those posts, that would be such a challenge to do.
Ive also, already missed the boat on trying to get this badge, but i have occasionally toyed with the idea of trying a weekly or monthly writing challenge one. The only time i tried this, i forgot about the time zone and accidently got two on the same day and none on the other.

anyway congrats to anyone that manages such a feat of commitment.

I have probably only scheduled a couple posts in all that time. I write and post immediately most of the time. Sometimes work or life gets in the way of writing all at once, but usually I write at night when the family is asleep.

but i have occasionally toyed with the idea of trying a weekly or monthly writing challenge one.

You should do it! It is a good practice - some kind of mindfulness for discipline, patience and consistency.

Thanks you kindly for your time to reply.

Its actually in my game plan to post more content on hive, im getting involved in trying to increase my HBD and being more "involved" in general.

I have never scheduled posts either, i do have templates in PEAKD because that helps "brand" my posts a bit and improves quality. And like you say work/family life balance. kids always throw a spanner in the works. I write early morning, am normally at my computer come 5:30am at the latest.

My problem with the weekly challenges is i actually try to post "quality content" with quality text, and edited and compiled photos. Something i value in the quality posts i see here.

I'm not 100% sure if i want to compromise the quality for quantity lol. I guess i'll just have to get real good at finding lots of quality content!

Thanks for your posts. I read them

I've probably posted more days than I have missed over 8.5 years, but I don't fret over it. Mind you I do have a long streak on Duolingo :) I'm not putting down your achievement at all and I am amazed how many people keep up the posting schedule. I do love all the data we have on Hive and have run various queries on it. You would struggle to do that on any closed platform.

Happy new year.

I know a little bit about the Hive blockchain... but one thing I'd really like to know is who and why Hive is traded so much.

$335K USD worth of Hive is printed anew each day, but it looks like $100M worth of Hive is traded every 24 hours...

image.png
Source

...and I don't really understand why. Who is buying it and why are they buying it? It's not like $100M is getting powered up daily or anything - so I guess it's just kind of traded between people for fun/potential profit?

It isn't a daily pool. I think the emissions are about 25 million per year. It is constantly filling and emptying simultaneously. But, yeah, a lot is traded in volume! I suspect mostly Korean accounts wash trading on Bithumb. Binance has gone past it though since the release of the future market I think.

Oh interesting... I just assumed it was a daily pool but it makes more sense to really be per block. 25 mil divided by 365 days is about 68K Hive which is $34K USD.

Also... while looking that up, I saw this...

image.png

I assume someone reading your post decided to invest heavily in Hive today.

Hive/KRW on Upbit jumped 150M in trading between my screenshots:

For @amigoponc, as your comment disappeared.

Where are you viewing that from?

If it is from a particular interface, they will probably only have access to their own numbers, like Peakd does. but, they might be viewed through multiple frontends which don't get counted. I use three or four frontends to consume from.

Vote count doesn't matter much and it is also worth considering that some people have multiple accounts that trail them, so if they read and vote, it might add more votes on top that are also theirs.

Hello friend, thanks for the observation. Tired of having a follower downvote me every comment I make, I've been fine tuning and running a script to prevent that. I'm very sorry that my reply from yesterday was deleted, but I've decided that I'm not going to let that friend who keeps tabs on everything I write on HIVE get away wi

Do you happen to have a few links that would help with learning more about HIVE? That is besides HiveBuzz because I already know about it :) I was shocked that very few people even earn monthly badges for daily posts or power ups that give you small HIVE delegations from HiveBuzz...

How did you get 7 years in a row? HIVE isn't even that old and as far as I know the posts on STEEM didn't transfer.. otherwise I would have like 5 years.. that purple 7 on your award is the days you have done it this year. If you miss a day it changes color.

I too learn something new, sometimes many new things when I read your Hive focused postings. I need to read more of them.

I should try out that PeakD audio thing so I could cover some of this stuff during the hours and hours of drive time. It would be like a Taraz audio book. If I could figure out a way to make it autoplay thru all your postings.

Congrats on another full year badge. Seven and still going strong! So impressive as I still struggle to complete one month at a time. The whole UTC thing continues to throw me off here in America. Oh well, I mustn't concern myself to much with the all badge stuff, just focus on quality and consistency!

most of the current authors and users on Hive don't spend much time at all understanding how Hive works in the backend

I hope with the massive hive pump recently that more people will be paying attention now! Since my commenting and curation is still a bit inconsistent to take max advantage of my HP, I was thinking about delegating some to a curation service to better grow my stake. I'm just not sure who the best curating teams are when I can't do it myself.

Congrats on that achievement. That is pretty impressive. I totally respect your ability to do that. I know I would have burned out a long time ago if I tried to do that. On top of that I feel like you sometimes post twice a day, so that is even more impressive. Unless I am just seeing the two posts spread across two days but they show up as one for me when I happen to log in.
