Softfork and wobbly outcomes

Just as I was going to bed....

You might have read a few minutes ago that the consensus witnesses have initiated and Steem has gone through a softfork. This shouldn't affect anyone... well... it will affect a few accounts.

IMG_20200224_011008.jpg

With Steemit Inc and the initial mined stake from 2016 being sold to Justin Sun, the stake that was earmarked and promised for Steem development suddenly was up in the air. The Softwork has temporarily put some restrictions on several Steemit Inc accounts in in order to secure the Steem blockchain.

If you didn't know what witnesses are for, securing the Steem blockchain is their first and foremost task, and it is their job to do what they deem necessary in order to do that job.

I have only just heard this news, like most other people and therefore I have not yet made up my mind on whether this is a positive or negative. However, perhaps this need not be either and this state could be a neutral position, until we sort out what is going on.

Over the last week, there has been a great amount of uncertainty and mixed-messaging coming out of the Tron Team and I am guessing this is what has instigated this move. Uncertainty creates fears and people on Steem have worked very hard to be here after 4 years and therefore, it is natural that we will protect it.

The question comes up however about the reasoning, as while the ninja mine is a threat to decentralization, this move has essentially frozen the funds of several privately held accounts and as far as I know, this sets a new precedent on Steem. Is it a good precedent?

Well, it depends on how one looks at it I guess as while this move might seem extreme to some, it also shows that the witnesses are very much doing their job to protect the chain, at any cost. This could backfire and create a lot of negative publicity, but at the same time it shows that the decisions we make through witness voting has indeed led to the protection of the chain, a decentralized protection.

Remember that that this is a softfork and can therefore be removed, which means voting for other witnesses who do not support it could lead to a rollbackfork (I have o idea if that is what it should or would be called), that would return the previous status quo.

For me, I am here on Steem, come hell or high water, and therefore I am going to ride this wave just as I do all the other ones, with Steem coming first. I am not yet sure that this is a move that supports that end, but I do believe that the mixed-messages coming from Tron a problematic if the uncharitable view of their intentions is the reality.

Well, now I will sleep on it....

Steem: Never a dull moment.

This is how I feel exactly. The importance is what will the community do, and what will the outcome be for those that simply come to create and share?

As for the witnesses, governance becomes infinitely more difficult the bigger something grows - which is something that should be welcomed. I feel as though the messaging could've been different.

It's okay to feel threatened, as that's what I read from the announcements, but a declaration of independence would've been received completely differently.

I think it might come back to haunt, but time will tell. This is crypto, drama is good, things move fast. Up and Down.

I'll still be here on whichever side of the chain remains.

I'm all about the content, the dream that this blockchain enables creators to receive - an audience - even if they're engaged, or not. :P

Yeah, it is fun at least - better than gambling apps :)

Ha, it definitely seems that way at times - especially now.

There’s nothing quite like a coup d’état.

Glad I read the @softfork222 post right after it came out. In my experience, once a post has more than about a hundred comments, it becomes harder and harder to load. 300+ and they rarely load at all (at least for me, your mileage may vary).

The load times on many comments sucks. I wish they would lad them in stages with the scroll :)

Interesting times --- again.

You should get everyone you know to cross post this...Seems like it is the new norm.

Lol. It is what it is for, but no one need vote on it. Perhaps 4 years from now they will be crossposting ours :D

Why bother...I just saw a post that said, literally, "oops" get $4.28...Why write words at all?

I think abusers of the function will eventually be punished in various ways that they won't like. Loss of autovoters, loss of trust, loss of attention, loss of friends... Lots to lose, not much to gain.

What some people will do for a few steem.

Hey, I need some T-dog words of wisdom...Feeling a bit negative...Although that latest post from meesterboom made me smile...Lol.

Haven't had a chance to read it yet. It is on my list for tomorrow.

I don't have many wise words, but I will tell you a smallsteps story.

She took a lego dog into the bath with her tonight and was happily playing with it. when I saw and said that she shouldn't have it there as they aren't made for the bath, she looked sad.

She then turned it over and saw on the paw it has the Lego print and asked what it says. And without looking I said it says, Lego.

She looked closely at it and said,

no. It says "can be washed once"

She's a cheeky monkey and I'm not letting her go once I hug her in July...Also, this would be a legit post for the Lego community. It would almost certainly gain $179.13 in rewards at least! Too may words though, would have to cut if back by 90%. Lol.

Have no idea if this is good or bad and like you will ride the wave. I just think this could be poking the bear, at least it will get his attention.

Are they protecting the chain. It are they protecting themselves...

Time will tell. I think as an initial reaction it is poor behaviour. Perhaps it would always remember it is never wise to poke a sleeping Bear

Yep, my initial reaction is the same. However, here we are and the time is ticking.

This is very bad. It may even be a criminal matter I wonder if this has anything to do with smooth resigning

No. Smooth supports it.

Not sure about criminal considering the nature of blockchain and dPOS, as well as the way the stake was obtained.

We going to roll over that again....crypto's have been determined to have value so people can proceed in court to sue when wronged. This just may be the big one that accelerates those behind blockchain technology that they aren't beyond the long arm of the law. Before it was just small fries filing complaints trying to make a pile big enough for someone to take notice....now they've done went up against someone much richer than them who could hire a lawyer and be in court in no time. At best their only legal option was to power down and leave steem and before making radical changes that could result in potential losses at best justinsuns options before doing so would be notification so they could remove their investment, and that's exactly what both parties would get told in a court of law. Justin has no right of determination over their stake without notice of change and they have no legal right over his to force him to tell what his plan of actions are. A judge would tell them he can do whatever he wants as long as there is sufficient notification to opt out. (I have no stake in this game but I will be trying to figure out how to unvote witnesses as I proxied them to some else whom I have no idea who they voted, all's I know is I don't want to end up in some legal hassle should that happen and be accused of being supportive of a illegal maneuver by supporting those who made the move.)

I have zero faith in your knowledge of the law.

LOL, you proxied your vote to someone, but don't know how to unproxy? And, you don't know who they vote for?

I have to do it through my keychain which somehow got screwed up, I've just spent the last hour trying to figure it all out. I really have no interest in voting for witnesses, I don't know who those people are and the all the changes they've made here since I've been here have been a detriment to the lower tier. There's no real voice behind protecting those on the lower tier. That's why this isn't a decentralized platform. If you want me to be honest I'll tell you what every one's problem is, that is now someone's come along that threatens them, they have been getting rich off their circle jerking sock puppetry for so long now they are quivering in their shoes at the prospects they could get screwed like the little guy. I find it rather ironic myself. I even made a little meme out of it the other day:

3pr8iz.jpg

You aren't the only above average person on the chain, I trusted tcpolymath, he knew the inner workings of the system way better than I did but the hierarchy managed to get him to decide to finally hang the place up.

Far as the law goes I know way more about the way the system is designed here than you do. You are not a lawyer either on top of being a foreigner. I also know if Sun does file suit it won't be in China, China doesn't like him, he no longer lives there and there's been no announcement the company headquarters are or have been moved out of the US. I am not saying he'll go that route, this may all work out, who knows, but you really can't say the lower tier isn't finding a bit of consolation in the upper tier sweating it out until it does after all the sweating we've done the last couple years. If it's any consolation to you I hardly doubt he'll go the route of litigation, all the illegalities, the scamming, the ponzi like scheme crypto's have been getting away with who'd want the legal system taking a look at all the criminality. Even the lady at the state (I think it was you I was talking to about her) after spending three days on the site told me I should be talking to the FBI but they'd probably just end up being paper stackers like the ftc. I know you don't want to hear it, you guys don't care, you've manged to circle the wagons to protect yourselves while leaving everybody else out in the dust. It's evident everywhere, there are just as many people happy to see Justin take over the place as their are disgruntled and worried circle jerkers going around in cirlces enriching themselves. They could have really done something bigger than FB would have ever been but their greed got in the way and it's been downhill ever since. At least they have a ray of hope he'll take the platform in the right direction, willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Anything would be better than watching someone make thirty bucks off an article about three piles of shit hanging from a ceiling or the guy yesterday who wrote a three, four paragraph article about the keychain now being offered in different languages and that tid bit of information made him sixty some dollars.

Justin had plenty of time to vote in different witnesses with his stake.
He didn't, which means he trusted the ones we have (as do I), to keep the chain secure.
If I ever started tweeting contradictory gibberish; and couldn't be contacted for a week I'd consider it a favour if the witnesses froze my stake and minimised my opportunity to damage the chain, at least until I had a chance to discuss it with them.
I don't think this will be a big deal. He bought into a chain controlled by witnesses; those witnesses used their best judgement in temporarily locking his stake.

I think it will be a big deal in time when that stake wants to move. I understand the move though.

As compared to what?...it was losing money, the value was dropping, I'd sure like to see them tell a judge that a system that borderlines being a ponzi scheme that all their decisions have been wise one's. I mean really, please do, I can hardly wait for that bit of comedic comedy to roll out in a court room.

Net result will be nothing. They will undo what has been done after being told nothing bad will happen and then Sun will do exactly as he planned to do...good or bad.
