RE: Algorithmic Degeneracy

Not so much out of ‘hiding’ from complexity, but out of a search for connection that, for a variety of reasons, may not be available in other ways.
When looking to AI companions instead of real people to combat loneliness, it is more an avoidance mechanism, isn't it? An unwillingness to take responsibility and the learning journey for real connection. The AI companion 2accepts them" no matter how they behave. It is another safe zone.

As @amigoponc says
I can see online activity as a valid coping mechanism for those who are trapped in their homes for some reason: a mother of young children, an invalid, an abused person, and the like. It could be a lifeline for some, not an unwillingness to take responsibility.
We have become afraid to be with others in the flesh, where those unexpected things happen often. Bring on fear of the unknown and drugs to combat it! Those drugs are traps, horrible traps, every bit as bad as living vicariously online and possibly contributive.
Our online environments can be, and are, tailored to our current understandings. Those understandings will never ever change if we can't be with others who think and live differently.
There's an awful lot to say about this.
