Begging for change and doing the work

avatar

Thirty minutes from now and combined with my two day a week furlough and the day off I took for the non-arrival of @galenkp (who should have been landing in Finland on Friday), I should be going entering into the first half of summer vacation. Due to the scheduling of a training session for my second day back afterward though, I will have to do all of the prep work before, which means I will have to work at least til Thursday as I have to wait for customer content to be delivered and as you can probably imagine, that isn't always timely.

Well, it doesn't really change much I guess since I only really have work to do on my vacation anyway, especially since the weather looks like it is going to be raining for the entire time.

I sat down a little while ago and gave myself some space to write a passage for my dad's eulogy, which will be read by my brother next week. While I can write a lot, it isn't easy to choose the last words to say to someone, and not even be able to say them directly. It is a strange concept to talk to the dead, but if it brings comfort to the living, that is okay. I think that for me, it isn't about getting a sense of closure, it is about reflecting on who my father was to me and what that might mean for my future.

There is value in having an understanding of the past and using it to predict the future and I can no more extract my father from my future than I can my own heart, as he is a part of me and will affect every decision I make at the genetic level at the very least. While I am not a carbon copy of him, there are plenty of similarities, so learning from his experience would be wise.

None of us know what the future holds for us and we have very little say over the hand luck will play, but being prepared for it to play a part is important in my opinion. The preparation for luck to benefit is the same preparation for success without luck, doing the prerequisite tasks in order to have access to the tertiary results. Life is much like any process of education, to be able to advance, the basics have to be learned, otherwise we can find ourselves out of our depth.

I think a lot of us are swimming in the deep end and feeling the pressure for survival in a world we aren't prepared for. I see a lot of the social interaction on places like Twitter as indicative of people who have not matured emotionally, but are putting themselves in conversations that trigger them. Outbursts of anger and violence that wouldn't be evoked, given the appropriate lessons in the past. I am pretty lucky to have a role model that exhibited at least some of the qualities of emotional control, but I do think that anyone can learn and improve themselves through practice.

We aren't encouraged to practice controlling ourselves though and instead are incentivized to do the opposite, to have uncontrolled and public outbursts as they generate drama and drive transactions. The payoff for us is to feel like our feelings matter, when in actual fact, most of our public feelings we ascribe ourselves are actually driven by an engineered narrative to evoke that very reaction, targeted at the groups we identify with at a granular level. It is a manipulation by design and because of our lack of relevance in the real world, we swallow it, hook, line and sinker. It is a race to the bottom and the social sinker used is heavy.

I think for me however, I have been moving ever further away from the drama of the media-driven world and instead looking at life at the more practical levels of economy and community. I believe this is a healthier view when the move is toward improving the community collaboration through an economy that encourages continued working together toward improvement.

This is definitely not the mainstream position, as even though many "movements" claim to be social, at their root is the influence of corporation and government driving them in a direction of their choosing, like cows through a cattle run. The polarization of the various groups is control mechanism that allows for those with the reigns to always have a common enemy available to direct an individual group, for every single group. It is interesting to note how many believe that their group is above that of others, without ever seeing the manipulation.

The future is uncertain, but I do not think that mine is as uncertain as I believe it to be - although from an economic perspective, it could fall anywhere between the gutter and the stars. I think that my path in the near-term looks much like today and the mid-term is going to head along the same track, looking more practically at the economic and community aspects of life and my role within that system. I think that in time, this is where the real social movements will take a foothold, as they start to push back against the crush from the increasingly powerful centralized authorities until eventually, ground is made and the pressure of the mass of a collected community forms cracks in the wall.

This has been socially done before from various perspectives and degrees, but where they all fell short was in the economic aspects - the movements were always begging for those who held economy to allow change. When the new movements have their self-sustaining and owned economy - the participants can be the change and make it stick.

It is time that we stop acting like beggars asking for change on the street - and start being the change we need to be for ourselves. We hold far more cards to our future than we realize, we just have to do the pre-work.

I definitely agree with you, @tarazkp: we must be the first to promote the change we want. As for your father, I believe that as long as a person is remembered, he will never die. As long as what he taught you remains in you, a part of him will continue to live. Next to the annoyance of absences, you always have the best place for those you loved. And that best place is in the heart and in the memories. Nice and productive tomorrow.

With enough people making small steps toward a better future, a great amount of movement can be accomplished. Just think, if everyone put on one kilo of weight, that would be 7 billion kilos and require the consumption of many more than that - the reverse is if everyone lost a kilo. This applies to everything we do en masse, small changes add up to a massive amount.

Have a great mid-week :)

We CAN be the change and the instruments of change. I really don't believe in luck but I certainly believe in work to maximize my chances.

Yes. And we need to realize there are no good cards or bad. Dolly Brunson won his last World Series of Poker (his 4th spread across 40 years I think) with a pair of 3s. Not the cards you'd ask for when 10 million is at stake. We all have the cards we need, just need to figure out how to play them.

My very best wishes to you and yours in this very hard time of mourning and loss. No matter the circumstances it's a hard time and yours seem more than normally difficult. Maybe even to the point of being called bad luck.

I think there is luck, but sometimes it looks like hard work coming to fruition, since that is the precondition. Sometimes, right place at the right time, falls into the right hands.

We all have the cards we need, just need to figure out how to play them.

I have this silly fantasy from when I was a kid that when I die, I would get a read out of all the stats of my life. I wonder if that would include a view of the perfect game played.

I am lucky. I had a good dad who had a good life. A hard life perhaps, but that might have been what made him a good dad.

I think that my path in the near-term looks much like today and the mid-term is going to head along the same track, looking more practically at the economic and community aspects of life and my role within that system.

This is indeed the way to go. Our world teaches self importance, personal stardom and the preachers focus on prosperity teachings. There are tons of books teaching about self improvent, but very few about the importance of focussing on communities.
It's all about I, me and myself.

The true power of a united community is underestimated by the "leaders" and it's about time that the correct caliber of leaders start to surface, the ones that have broken away from the song and the dance crowds to forge a new way.

I think that your dad likes your thoughts!

I think this has been the last 60 years of social movements to celebrate the individual and put celebrities on pedestals.

The leaders of the future will be those who are able to unite, not conquer communities.

I think that your dad likes your thoughts!

We used to have some good discussions back in the day :)

And we have seen so many that fell off those pedestals my friend.

To unite the communities is to serve them, not to rule over them.

I bet and I am sure that good seeds were sown by your father.

Thank you for the token.

A curious point in the world is that dynasties, empires, governments and countries all come to an end -. but the cities live on. Cities are agnostic to the politics of society, the community that resides in them keeps them alive, no matter what they believe at the time.

So true and even if they change the names of the cities, such as Constantinople to Istanbul, the city still survives.
It is always the human factor that is at play and they have always in history united in revolt.
Nowadays we see identical forms of disturbances amongst the nations, but only time will tell what type of united revolt will result as at present it is sporadic and disjointed.
Each individual community fighting for their own rights with errant leaders.

The latter is what has to be changed for any chance at real progress!

Constantinople to Istanbul, the city still survives.

With very little exception, cities continue. They survive, war and famine, carpet bombing and fire. Pompeii might be an exception.

Nowadays we see identical forms of disturbances amongst the nations, but only time will tell what type of united revolt will result as at present it is sporadic and disjointed.

Perhaps war, perhaps a quite revolution of economic energy.

Well, if there is no alternative, a quiet revolution of economic energy would be the ideal.
With more thinkers like you at the forefront and this is not meant to be false praise, as you know me.
Your job might be to find genuine people with similar thinking capacities.
The IT infrastructure is already in place and waiting.

Dear tarazkp, Do you mean that city-states, like the medieval feudal era, lead the world? In East Asia, global companies with a combination of countries and companies are increasing.

In particular, Korean and Chinese companies are building global corporate empires that are outside the control of the state. Do you think urban countries will appear in East Asia?

It's sad the way the world thrives on drama and hides under the 'freedom to express myself' mantra. Because of this mission to be inclusive and not discriminate, we tend to excuse a lot of vile and inhumane behaviors. I have no problem with one sharing their thought and doing what makes them happy but I definitely believe we have to draw the line at some point.

The problem at the moment is that the line is currently being drawn by corporations looking to increase their profits. "You can't say that" is YouTube, Facebook and Twitter banning an account, when advertisers complain.

I see a little bit of a turn away from the large conglomerates, to the more decentralized stores just in my weekly shopping trips. We made the choice to not support the large chain grocery store here (Safeway), and to support the smaller business stores.

We avoid the chain store brands and go for the smaller brands when available. The coffee shop where we used to get our coffee did a poor job of the covid-19 lock down and pretty much lost a 30 year long customer to a new Coffee Brand. They will recover I am sure, as I am also sure that we will still on occasion visit and make small purchases.

The division of the people, the pitting of the people against the people, during this time is pretty much run by people that like to pull strings and to cause strife and unrest to further their goals of society and to turn society in the direction they want to go, but I think that is beginning to back fire on them a little bit.

Instead of governments breaking apart large conglomerates people are beginning to do it with their own choices of what is acceptable and not acceptable. And when large businesses start to get into the what is acceptable and not acceptable choice, (such as all the Facebook Ad pulling), then society is approaching the tipping point back toward the needs of the people.

While we can't afford everything, we have tried to buy from smaller, local companies when possible for the house. It has obviously cost a significant amount more, so we have done it sparingly and in places where someone might ask, "I like that, where did you get it?" Perhaps they will get a new customer in time.

The pitting against is profit driven in one way or another, as is the banning of those who might speak out against it. I think you are right, it is beginning to backfire, as the gladiator events to appease the crowds has tumbled out onto the streets.

The needs of the people position will hopefully be one that will see a slow rise to that tipping point, then gather momentum fast - shock and awe ;)

Those are great odds looking up! Bruce Lee said,
"It's like a finger pointing to the moon...."

I am sure you may not perhaps find the perfect words but rather the right ones! I believe time and chance happen to us all... it is more about what we do with our chances within the time allotted. Preparation is paramount as you pointed out. Hopefully, we can all get the change in that we want to see before idiocracy comes into full effect!

I 100% agree that you have to be prepared for luck. People think that luck is a magic fairy sprinkling fairy dust all over them out of the blue. I think this kind of view is flawed. Good things come to those who prepare for it. Opportunity comes to those who seek it and for those who create the circumstances even when the circumstances aren't there to start with.

I think it is just in the laws of the Universe to assure a right balance into the world. A dash of sprinkled luck for a dash of work and preparation. It is and it has always been a fair trade.

I've known that people get absolutely incensed when they're trying to cause drama (with or without realising it) and I completely ignore them (which was often because I cba), that delusion of relevance might be why it's so effective XD

Good luck with the eulogy, as I said to Galen, whatever you write will be perfect :)

Often the people who cause the most drama, are oblivious to the world they create - part of that delusion.

The writing went okay, but it will never be enough.
