FIRE SNAKE: UNSCHOOLING CHEMICAL EXPERIMENT

Our unschooling Saturday with awful windy and cold weather was devoted to... chemical experiments!

My son and me, we both like them, and I often share with my HiveFam our tries;)

So one more for you today, guys. It's called Fire Snake, and now you will see why.

We've bought a ready set in the kids shop.

The box includes an instruction, chemical elements, a glove and even a small ceramic plate!

ingredients in the box are urotropin and calcium gluconate.

The experiment is connected with open fire, that's why we have a long instruction what to do and how to be safe.

  1. So at first we took urotropin and put it on the plate. It is a white powder.

  1. Then we make a deepening in it and put calcium gluconate there.

  2. Then...fire!

and....show began!

We were looking how our Fire Snake was born and couldn't believe our eyes how fantastic it was!

Ingredients were burning about 15 min, and it was long and amazing!

As a result of the reaction, calcium gluconate decomposes when heated into carbon, calcium oxide, carbon dioxide and water. The porous structure of the snake is ensured by the abundant release of carbon dioxide.

Fire snake is grey in color due to calcium oxide (white) and ash (also black or gray carbon) from the organic part of the original salt. This experiment clearly shows the instability of calcium carbonate to heat.

We both were impressed by this experiment, and it seems to be my son is starting to fall in love with chemistry;))

There are few chemical reactions as fascinating as the fire snake, and most of them are more dangerous, such as rockets and explosives. What a great way to give your child the gift of interest in science.

Thanks!

I amn't ready for explosives yet;)) it's really the best way to male studying interesting. My love to chemistry was killed by a bad school teacher, and I know NOTHING in it, though I got 4 in my school certificate (4 is good). Hi, fair school marks;)

Wow, I'm impressed at the same time enjoyed reading your activity. Experimenting is one of my favorites when I was still a student. Learning by doing is the best.

do you like chemistry as well? Me yes, but I know nothing of it because of a bad school teacher;( now it's my chance; to study it again;))

Oh wow! What an interesting activity! The chemical changes and the birth of the fire snake will definitely ignite more enthusiasm in Science.
