They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This is all well and true but I would like to take a different approach and define a picture as a perception of reality seen through a certain angle.
Now, a big picture is a general or overview perception of reality as opposed to a specific subsection view. For example, some people say the big picture of life is simply to live and experience it.
And within that big picture, some may choose to experience life through embarking on creative pursuits, climbing the corporate ladder, raising a family, or even traveling the world.
Arguably, there's no single 'right' big picture, but rather a spectrum of possibilities contained within a spectrum of reality.
Our individual perceptions of reality contribute to a shared reality, like pixels forming a complete image. Think of an anthill: each ant has its own limited perspective, but together they create a complex system.
The Power Of Networks
Speaking of a complex system, what's the big picture with cryptocurrencies?
As a technology, we know it is revolutionary, built on top of blockchain and this premise of decentralization. Unlike traditional currencies, cryptocurrencies can operate on decentralized networks, like a giant, transparent ledger secured by cryptography.
A big picture with cryptocurrency is democratization of finance, gaining a greater control of our finances if not total control through participation and ownership in these decentralized networks.
This shift in power dynamics could potentially bypass traditional financial institutions, making financial services more accessible and efficient.
Despite its drawbacks, I think a more open financial system can create ripple effects beyond just individual empowerment.
For one, crypto's ability to democratize finance could become the fuel that ignites a new wave of innovation, disrupting established industries and paving the way for entirely new applications. These applications could find fertile ground in the fertile ground of a more open financial system.
In theory, if finance can be democratized, then commerce, agriculture, data ownership, and even governance can also be democratized. It's a possible future promised by blockchain systems, a future where power is and can be distributed more evenly.
The Broader Landscape
But cryptocurrencies are just one piece of the puzzle. The "bigger picture of the big picture" involves the convergence of multiple groundbreaking technologies apart from blockchain. artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and the Internet of Things(IoT) are just a few examples. When these technologies come together, they have the potential to reshape our world in ways we can only begin to imagine.
Of course, one could think that this is an over-exaggeration, many technological inventions have been dubbed to reshape our world but fail to deliver on that promise, especially in the previous decade.
However, the difference with these groundbreaking technologies is that their potential impact goes beyond incremental improvements.
They have the capability to create a structural shift akin to the invention of the wheel. The wheel didn't just improve transportation; it fundamentally changed how societies functioned and interacted.
Similarly, the convergence of AI, VR, IoT, and blockchain has the potential to reshape our world in ways we can't fully predict, but we can be certain life will never be the same.
