Is There A Philosophy Behind Web3?

avatar

Philosophy is more than an empirical concept in my opinion because at the heart of it are basic principles or tenets that we follow and build on. Although the details can seem complex, there's always a sound reasoning behind them.

It's no secret that we're experiencing a global transition, a change in fundamental structures. And it could turn out to be a major transition when we look back a decade from now at this moment we're living in.

In a way, web3 is a movement that's redefining the nature of the internet, another iteration of it and there is a philosophy behind it. Key principles that underpin the web3 movement.

Decentralization

I believe the core tenet is the idea of decentralizing the internet. We've come to know that the internet should no longer be controlled by a few powerful corporations, but rather by a distributed network of users.

One of the reasons is because this powerful corporations don't have the best interest of its users at heart and have been abusing their power some of which we're only beginning to realise.

Besides, centralised structures are vulnerable and susceptible to all kinds of hacks in which valuable data is stolen or tampered with.

Trustlessness And Openness

Trustlessness simply means that internet users will not have to rely on trust in third party intermediaries such as banks or social media platforms. Rather, it is ensured through the blockchain via smart contacts that enforce rules and transactions.

In simple terms, one doesn't need to trust that the other party will hold their end of the deal. The blockchain will make sure of that acting as the intermediary. This is especially useful in the finance space.

Openness, on the other hand, is the principle of transparency and access to the underlying code and protocols allowing anyone to audit it. Like Linux, the technology behind web3 is mainly open source. So anyone can access, study, and contribute improvements or bug fixes to it. And also modify the code to create something else from it. Isn't that the epitome of decentralization?

Privacy

Privacy has become a hot topic due to the growing concerns about the ways in which our personal information is been collected, use and shared in this digital age.

We all know that with the rise of social media, people are sharing more data than ever before without fully understanding how it is being used and who has access to it.

Web3 seeks to protect user data and give users control over their personal information, in contrast to the current internet, where user data is often collected without their consent and sold by large corporations for massive profits.

User Empowerment

I intuit that on the development perspective, this is the end goal despite it also being a fundamental principle.

Web3 seeks to empower users through giving them more options and greater control of their online experience. Be it control over their data, the ability to freely participate in decentralised networks, or to transact value between themselves without relying on traditional institutions.

For me, it is the birth of the sovereign individual. A person who has a high degree of personal autonomy and control over their own affairs in the digital age.

Conclusion

I wonder what the philosophy of web2 was while it was being founded almost two decades ago. Most of us can only guess based on the current fruits it has beared.

The philosophy behind web3 is altruistic. And although, human nature hasn't changed much over the decades. One way or another, I believe it will come to fruition and I'm excited to see what's in store for us. Or will it not?

I also wonder what the philosophy or the goal behind Web 2 was but at least we are witnessing its fruits. As for Web 3 the motive is clear, give power to the people, have the internet decentralized, and knowing humans will do their own thing we are seeing some projects going against decentralization attacked and going extinct.

It was a thought that crossed my mind while writing this post. Perhaps, the intentions were good but things changed along the way like it was portrayed in the movie The Social Network.

Yes, I think many projects are still operating with web2 mentality not realising that web3 is a different battleground altogether. I hope them going extinct will be a lesson for future project builders.

I think just like you my friend! Behind web 3 there are deep concepts of equality, and democracy, where users have full autonomy over their data, actions and decisions.
A technology that will revolutionize the world as we know it, I hope.

Exactly! My hope is at maximum because I think the time is right for web3 to revolutionize the world. We need a change, the old system has to be discarded as it is no longer effecient and doesn't reflect the ideal of the general population.

Web3 is not altruistic. It based on the idea that value can be built outside of siloes and walled gardens and that creators themselves can build their own platforms without intermediaries. We're not there yet, but we're getting close.

Right! Creators will have the freedom to own their creations and do with it as they see fit. Without walled gardens, value will be more exponential. I hope we get there soon.

(Edited)

Web3 gives plenty of options for decentralized finance applications, then you have (NFTs), frameworks like Web3.js and Solidity, which allow developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) etc.

Web3 is a evolving space that is actually changing the way we interact with the internet and with each other. It offers a more decentralized, potentially secured, and collaborative web experience that has the massive potential to transform many industries.

It is important to learn and be aware of its advantages and flaws at the very beginning, to be ahead the game, and cut piece of this delicious cake for our own;)

Indeed! It's an ever evolving space with a lot of great potential in the form of massive opportunities and incredible pitfalls. The beginning is not everything but it is a lot so now is the time to position ourselves correctly so that we can be at the front row when the ship leaves the station. It will be really exciting!

I am glad to be part of the web3 fam. Decentralization is what the world needs now and what the future entails.

Surely, one way or the other the world will have what it needs :)
Glad to be experiencing the journey too!

For this and much more, we have allowed ourselves the right to manage our own money; without intermediaries. We can create groups with different themes and advance the interaction of ideas and discuss them. Web3 is a free field for everything.

Exactly! There are no limitations on what could be achieved collectively without these centralised entities trying to control everything. I think humanity is about to experience a golden age of evolution. Fingers crossed!!

Decentralisation and privacy above everything are things I really love about Web3

Yes buddy!!! It's inevitable.
I think privacy is of utmost importance because we're beginning to realise its value in the digital age.
