Have You Heard Of Phygital Stores?

Like water soaking up a sponge, the digital world is seeping into the physical world. Digital twins are replicas of physical systems, products or services.

Retail stores are undergoing a transformation by which they're embedded with digital attributes making them phygital stores.

Forget the retail apocalypse for awhile. It seems phygital stores are here to blend the best of online and offline shopping, creating a seamless, interactive experience.

Anyone who has watched a good amount of sci-fi movies probably came across characters trying on clothes with a virtual mirror, customizing footwear with a digital touch screen, or accessing detailed product information through smart displays.

Take Nike's House of Innovation in New York City, where shoppers can virtually try on and customize sneakers using AR technology in their 'digital stadium'.

Or walking into an Amazon Go store, grabbing what you need, and simply walking out without checkout lines. Sensors and machine learning track your purchases, making the physical experience as seamless as online shopping.

Both are real world examples of phygital stores, reimagining retail in the process. But is it just a gimmick or is this the future?

A Balancing Act Between Convenience and Privacy

Thanks to the covid pandemic, the new normal is gradually establishing itself on certain domains, especially those whose normality wasn't convenient.

According to The Current, today's shoppers are increasingly digital-savvy. There's also a shift in consumer behavior and evolving consumer expectations.

More than convenience, modern shoppers crave personalization and engagement. Perhaps, we're very picky and easily bored.

But guess what? Through bridging the gap between online browsing and physical product interaction, phygital stores can offer a unique shopping experience that's both informative and enjoyable.

More than a technological advancement, this thing solves the age-old problem of indecisiveness! Because one can try on clothes virtually before committing, or customizing products to their exact preferences.

These stores can also bridge the information gap, offering detailed product specs and user reviews right in the store.

From a retailer's perspective, this personalized, interactive approach can lead to increased customer satisfaction, brand loyalty, and ultimately, sales. However, at what cost?

Creating a truly omnichannel experience that seamlessly connects online and offline touchpoints requires robust technological infrastructure. This is been worked on but we're not there yet.

At present, this convenience equates with high costs that may eat into the revenue of the business.

Besides that, designing a store that seamlessly integrates digital elements without overwhelming customers requires careful and considerate planning.

As much as we crave convenience, engagement and personalization, if it isn't simple enough, it wouldn't be used often.

What's the cost of personalization and engagement? I think it's giving out too much information. Given that today's shoppers are increasingly digital-savvy, data privacy concerns will also need to be addressed, ensuring customers trust how their information is collected and used responsibly.

In Closing

Physical plus digital equates phygital. In the retail sector, it is not just a gimmick but more of a futuristic vision that's gradually becoming a 'standard' reality.

As technology continues to evolve and consumer expectations shift, this reimagining of retail stores could play an increasingly important role in the future of retail.

I'm looking forward to the day of having a first hard experience of a phygital store, a unique and engaging shopping journey that bridges the physical and digital divide in a way that feels effortless, exciting, and maybe even a little bit magical.

Have you experienced a phygital store yet?

Yes, it's relatively new and it seems to be more on testing phase than production phase. Blending the physical and digital in a store will definitely be an exciting and interesting shopping experience.
