In an amazing development, orbital hotels are being proposed and developed, and the possibility is closer than originally thought.
Space Development, a space station development and engineering firm, is seeking funding for their orbital hotel that can hold up to 400 guests. The future is here, and this science fiction feature is something we are capable of constructing.
The company is seeking $1 billion for their hotel that includes accommodation and recreational facilities for 200-400 guests. The hotel plan features artifical gravity from spinning of the hotel structure that pushes outward. The hotel also features recreational activities and facilities and the possibility for guests to experience zero gravity and reduced gravity in certain quarters.
Space Development is not the first firm to propose a hotel in space, and the distinction is the ability of their design to hold hundreds of guests at a time. This is a fun and interesting development that will lead to future technology. The space program and space-related technology development has led to the creation of technologies including Velcro, semiconductor engineering and the laser. I am excited to see this project come to fruition.
