The Korg Volca Beats
Introduction
OK so this week we have the Korg Volca Beats in front of us. I did a little jam video of this a few months ago:
Of all the volcas we have owned and toyed with, this is the one that we couldn't do without. It is immediate, fun, and sounds surprisingly good for such a wee package. Aside from the snare which is a little weak, all the sounds a great, especially the kick which has a real thump to it.
Connect the dots
Syncing is easily done via MIDI, and although it is a little hissy, the 3.5mm audio out works well enough. It will chomp through six AA batteries in no time, so I would definitely recommend using a power adapter.
Beating the steps
This thing is a breeze to use; twiddle knobs for sound, enter steps to play. There are dedicated buttons to scroll through the six analog and four PCM sounds. The knobs can be motion recorded, and there is a global delay and a global stutter effect, both of which have a wide sweet spot.
Current cost
These things a cheap. New for a £120ish, they are not much cheaper secondhand, and not very easy to come by. Peeps seem to keep hold of them...
Stick Up Boys rating: 11/10
In defiance of mathematics I'm giving the Korg Volca Beats 11/10. It sounds great, is cheap, is a load of fun to use, portable, and plays nice with other things. Nice.
If you have a great piece of music equipment you think we should have a look at then leave a link in the comments.
Big up all the music in the world.

Guess that's years of practice.
Interesting. Want one! I'll stick it on my list for Santa 👍
Looks like fun. I sometimes think I need a drum machine.
