Equipment highlight- Korg Monotron

Introduction

We love sharing some information about the equipment we use. We have so much equipment it is great to reflect on what we use and how we use it. Up for discussion today is the diminuitive but mighty sounding Korg Monotron, a perfect last minute stocking filler, if you can find one....

This beauty, released in 2010, kicked off a wave of mini-releases from Korg, not just in the Monotron range but later on in the much-loved Volca range. It wasn't long before Yamaha and Roland picked up on this "smaller is better" vibe, with the Reface and Boutique range following in 2015 and 2016 respectively. But is smaller is better better? Is it?

Technical Spec

What's to say? It runs off a couple of AAAs, has stereo in and out on 1/8" jacks, and a built-in speaker. And it is small enough to conceal in a large pocket for when you go stealth mode.

Current cost

At the time of writing, I couldn't find a single instance of the OG Korg Monotron for sale! What does that say, a future classic? Let me know if you find one....

What we love about it

This thing is a great bit of fun, and easily accesible to anyone, no musical ability is required. Perhaps that is why we love it.... It has appeared all over our music; anytime there is a weird swoosh, warble, sweep or gurgle, it is probably the Korg Montron.

Stick Up Boys rating: /10

For shear fun factor this thing scores highly. It is not so versatile however, although outside the studio it is good for confusing and delighting animals and young children.
I give it a 7/10.

If you have a great piece of music equipment you think we should have a look at then leave a link in the comments.

Big up all the music in the world!

How easy is it to play that keyboard? There do seem to be a lot of cheapish little boxes these days.

This is definitely one of those instruments (like the bee-gees keyboard) that needs to be sampled to made useful in the studio. But still a lot of fun!

I almost bought several of the Volca instruments at one point. Have you played with any of the sequencers/drum machines?
