Monday Drumday: Seeing double

Firstly note that my phone ran out of space so the video cut a little short, but I did not have much else to say. I am not an expert on drumming, but I am sharing my learning experience.

This week I have been looking at double stroke rolls, which are a commonly used drumming technique and one of the standard 'rudiments'.

I had assumed you just hit the drum twice, but it is more subtle than that. You need to use technique to get speed and endurance.

My namesake Stephen Clark emphasises using the bounce of the stick to do some of the work. He sells a course all about hand technique that he obviously wants you to buy. I get his daily emails with extra videos, but am not sure I will buy the course.

This guy talks about using the wrist and then the fingers.

Then this one uses the 'Moeller' method that gets multiple hits using flowing motion.

I think it may actually be some combination of these that is actually used. I have issues with my right hand due to muscle loss and I have hopes I can build some strength through drumming, but it is going to take some persistence to see what works for me. Most of these teachers say this is something you really have to work on for a while.

I am quite analytical about things, so I find this all interesting, but I also want to have fun. I expect some players just pick these things up instinctively, but having it explained can provide shortcuts.

I will be interested in what the experienced drummers think.
