Living the farm life : Cultivating dreams and harvesting joy ! [Threshing Job]

A farmer's life in agriculture is typically characterized by hard physical labor, long hours, dependence on weather conditions, and a deep connection to the land. It is not only related to sowing the seeds un the fields but also to make sure the grains were available in the market. For this they have to seperate the grain from the straws and then pack them for selling in the market. Since Friday I have been busy in getting thungs wrapped up. It is no use to keep the grains idle in the field. Also lack of labourers in the village calls for some quick action. This ultimately leads to use of machine - A thresher machine!

Threshing is the last step in the farming process. It is the process of separating the edible part of a grain or crop from the straw that holds it in place. It is a step that takes place after the crop has been harvested. Last week, I brought all the stack to a seperate land and allow them to dry.

Now it is time to seperate the grains. Threshing can be done by hand which is very labour intensive, or with a machine. I opted for the machine to get quick result. A combine is a machine that can make threshing easier. I never made use of thr machine before. So this was first experince too. The machine was carried by a tractor and had a drum with the Shaft behind. There was the caution note pasted at one side of the drum.

After running for the machine for few days, I get hold of them Friday afternoon. I went ahead to help them as much as possible.

A thresher machine is used to separates grain from the plant stalks by feeding the harvested crop between a rotating cylinder with teeth (threshing drum) and a stationary concave surface, causing the grain to be rubbed off and fall through the concave while the straw is carried away by a series of "walkers" to the back of the machine, where any remaining grain is further shaken out. The separated grain then goes through a cleaning process to remove chaff and impurities using screens and air blasts.

I consider myself lucky to look inside the machine. I was actually curious and wondering to see how the machine works. I wanted to see the rotating blade, and the machine got struck in between. It was jammed by excessive use of the stacks.

The machine operator, open up the covered portion and clean the struck hays. I got the oppurtunity to peep insude from a distance. It was heavy machinery portion with revolving blades. Like turbine that rotates.

The machine operates in a very simpler way.

  • The harvested crop is fed into the machine through an opening where it enters between the threshing drum and the concave.
  • This rotating cylinder has teeth or bars that actively rub against the crop, forcefully detaching the grains from the stalks.

  • A vibrating screen with air flow that separates the remaining chaff and debris from the grain, leaving behind a clean grain sample.

The only drawbacks that I saw was the excessive dust generated while the hays were seperated. They were blown in the air through a open vault. The entire area gets filled up with hays and dust.

The machine operates on hourly rate. We gave to call them, and they will visit only ofnthey have a good demands. Finally, after running for got 45 minutes, I got my stock of grains. Soon I found the buyer, who buy the qty at a good rate.

This is how the farming seasons ends for a farmer. From sowing to irrigating, to harvesting to selling. It was a long process but that is how farmer earn their livelihood. Now only worry left was to dispose of the bit mountain of hays. It is going to be headache as finding a buyer is not easy. Need to deal with them seperstelly.

Peace!!
