DeepFake : Threat to Identity [evaluate before authenticate]
In the last weeks, our esteemed prime minister has shown a lot of concern over the misuses of technology. Especially when it comes to deepfake video. Firstly, he highlighted the concern at the G20 Summit and then again, yesterday while Interacting with students during the grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon. He has also flagged the issue of deepfakes on social media. He has been quite active on this topic and sending some loud warning to people to be careful with new technology. His focus is on the rise in AI-generated videos and pictures. In one of the message he is clearly stating the danger that Deep fakes possessed.
"We have to be careful with new technology. If these are used carefully, they can be very useful. However, if these are misused, it can create huge problems. You must be aware of deepfake videos made with the help of generative AI,"
The warning and concern came against the backdrop of deepfake videos of several Bollywood actors, politicians and some high profile individuals circulating on social media, raising dangers over the potential misuse of AI technology.
Technology + Social media
In the technological era, everything is possible and Deepfake is darker side of the technology. As the name itself suggest, something which is not real and it is fake. Deepfake is a AI technology to doctor pictures or videos in such a way that the person can impersonate anyone and say something or do activities that never actually occurred. Such videos when put on the social media, it act as fire in the jungle. Social media fuels the spread of Such video, without even checking on the Authenticity. This may lead to rise jn extortion cases at global level. And also it spoil people creditibility and Social status. A study revealed that people remember fake news more than real news. This is shere Deepfake videos are more dangerous in killing any person identity.
Deepfake content and Self evaluation
It is important for people to evaluate the things or situation before getting to any conclusion. It has been noticed that it is pretty difficult to difrentiate the actual video with the fake. These deepfake videos are created so precisely using computer software, machine learning (ML) and face swapping that make it difficult to recgnize the fakeness in it. Mere looking at it people start beliving it to be authentic and real.
The Indian government has already cracking the whip on social media platforms for deep fakes content. Individuals convicted of this offence could face imprisonment for a maximum of three years and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.
At the same time it get too crucial for the viewers to employ critical thinking before authenticating such content. A viewer can self evaluate the content through self examining with some questions like:
- What is the intent of making such content.
- What is the original source of the content.
- When and where the vides were made.
- Who is gaining from such videos.
Advancements in this darker side of technologies raise clear social, moral and political concerns. A major worry is, how these may influence democracy, in general, and during the time of elections. Creating deepfakes is a new tech, and it is getting better fast.
All of a sudden, generative artificial intelligence has become accessible to everyone. The sooner people learn to use this technology, the more informed they can be about how to use it wisely and productively.
Peace !!

In my opinion the prime minister, just as most other top politicians worldwide, don't really care about your safety online or offline. I think it is a case of introducing a problem for people to cry for a solution, and a solution is ID checking you each time you're accessing the internet. That's a next level of tracking everything you're doing 24/7, people will be begging for it.
