Solominer is now a Hive witness

avatar
(Edited)

After seven years on the blockchain, I have built a server and am now waiting to my first block to mine. Price feed seems to be working, should update every 12 hours based on current settings.

So now I wait for my first transaction to process then my version and last block should populate in the witness tab.

Guessing that could be anywhere from now to 24 hours from now.

Update: I mined my first block two hours ago early Monday morning.

Server specs:

GMKtec Gaming Mini PC
Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS
AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS (Turbo 4.75GHz) 8 cores 16 threads
Radeon 650M mobile GPU
32GB DDR5 2x16GB (4800MHz)
2TB SSD PCIe GEN3.0 (Read Speed 3500MB/s)
1 Gbps fiber internet
UPS battery backup
Ran on solar power

Awesome! Was it hard to setup and run the script for it or rather easy? I'm still trying to figure that part out. Any doc you referenced?

It took me a few days to figure it all out. And some of the guides I followed had wrong port numbers, but luckily another witness helped me fix it and then things got much more smooth..

If you check out the peakd posts at the bottom of this post, those were the most helpful to me.

Hell yah!

I have to figure out who to axe so I can cast my vote now! Surely the profit as a small witness wasn’t the motivator. So what was it for you?

Since I have a background in computer science and spent many years supporting computer systems.. So I have wanted to try building a Hive server for awhile. But there were always some resources missing from what I needed to get it done. But now with everything I need figured I should give it a try.

Ah thank you, hopefully I am up for the task. Yeah I will keep making garden posts, but as winter comes around it will be good to have other tasks. Things slow down in the garden when its cold around here.

Well now a days these mini PCs are quite powerful, you can run games at 1080p on them quite well.

Nice! It's amazing to see all that tech in such a small box. I used to build my own gaming computers and that looks to be about the size of the old power supply that was inside the huge almost file cabinet size box.

I've considered becoming a witness a few times, will be following you closely.
Looks like you already have a good jumpstart!
Good luck!

It sure is, I did not really consider these mini PCs up until just a year ago. But they are quite powerful, amazing the breakthroughs in tech we make with how small they are getting.

Hehe yeah the whole mini pc is about a quarter of the size of a normal PSU.

Nice, well if you need help let me know.

Yeah amazing I am already over 2 million in votes. That is way more than I expected honestly.

Thanks

I may rethink it soon. I was looking at spinning up an AWS or Azure instance, but seemed hard to justify the subscription expense. This idea is definitely worth additional thought.

My experience trying to run a witness on a VPS has been quite poor. In the end that is why I self hosted. Otherwise a machine of my specs would cost quite a bit a month.

I must conclude that the process (my way to become a witness) itself seems to be quite complicated, as I can easily see that you are receiving a large number of congratulations. In any case, I'm already out of the running. I get congratulations when I manage to untie the laces of my shoes, which I usually try to prevent from being stolen by tying a double knot around them.😣
So I can use some of those congratulations and pass them on to you. At least I managed to make it through the Witness Vote without any major injuries of any kind. 😊

It is indeed quite a bit of work to set it up, but well worth it I think.

i've been using it for gaming these past months and imost say it's very stable so far .

bought mine with 1tb ssd and 64gb ram

still have my big pc for gaming if needed amd ryzen 9 5950 + amd 6800xt ;)

i will support your witness with all my accounts .

Oh nice, I have two mini PCs now.

One is used for watching Youtube videos and other media on the couch. It was really basic, cost about half of the mini pc for my witness. And then one is "gaming spec" and its much more powerful. I use that for my witness server.

These PCs are good for POS mining, but will probably not much good for POW mining.

Wowzers! This is great news. I'm sure you will be a very positive force for Hive, you seem like such a sound Hivian and you like being close to nature - surely that's a winning combination?!

I am delighted to hear this. Just to remind you I am new to Hive and I haven't started voting on witnesses yet. I am still trying to work out the good guys from the bad guys so to speak, not that I think there are many bad witnesses out there but there are some that aren't my cup of tea shall we say, and some I wish to avoid. You are not one of them.

You will certainly be added to my witness vote list for sure. I suppose I had better crack on with sorting out which witnesses to vote for. You have just made that a little bit easier.

Your witness announcement post is classic you! Thanks for vividly demonstrating what's involved in running a witness server for the Hive blockchain. It has been very insightful and I have learned much.

I want to see you in the Top 20 witnesses very soon.

Good luck!

My whole life I have been curious about nature, and luckily my friends have helped me get much closer to it over the years. But my career has always been in technology and computers, so I feel like I am finally merging both of my major interests by blogging and supporting the network that I blog on by producing blocks.

I feel ya, many of the witnesses you see have certain Dapps they made and people really appreciate them for that.

Thank you for voting for me. Hopefully one day I can make it there.

That's frickin awesome that you are now in a position to fuse both of your major interests, and now become one of the guardians of the chain at the same time. I'm now beginning to see the trajectory of your Hive journey, it makes sense.

P.s Can't believe you are responding to all the messages on this post - that's some commendable effort!

Hello @solominer,

My congratulations!

Nice to see you in the list of witnesses! 😊

What a coincidence that I will soon be holding a virtual meetup on the topic of witness. It's about getting to know witnesses personally and bringing this important topic closer to the hivians, as well as an exchange about technical possibilities. However, it is a purely German-speaking event, as my MeetUp is basically intended to offer all German-speaking hivians in the world a networking and exchange opportunity. So if you can speak German, I would like to invite you to join us.

Best regards and good luck with your witness❣️

Ah thank you, yes I am glad to be a witness now too.

Oh that is cool, unfortunately I do not speak German. Hope it all goes well.

hello @solominer

why did you actually decide to do a witness?

Yes thank you, everything went very well! 😊

It's become very quiet in the german community and I'm trying to liven it up a bit with the meetup. A mixture of information, promotion for the respective blog or project and getting to know each other. Maybe one day I'll organise a bilingual meetup with interpreting and then I'll be happy to invite you as my interview guest. Unfortunately, my English is not as good as it used to be and some people would hardly be able to understand the spoken English, so it would be interpreted so as not to exclude anyone.

I decided to become a witness as I have a background in computer systems through out my career. So I really wanted to join the others producing blocks one day on Hive, using my computer skills to benefit the community.

Ah, well please understand during the bear markets things can get really quiet in the crypto world. I have seen that time and time again through the cycles I have witnessed in crypto. Once we hit all time highs expect things to get more lively again.

That would be great, I would be happy to be a guest to be interviewed. Its okay you can always ask me by writing and not speaking. I understand.

These are very honourable reasons and Witnesses are very important to Hive. Good that you are now one of them.

I know but it's just a pity when there is so little activity in the community, that's why I'm trying to motivate and help NewBees. I will stay patient here and Hodl. I think Hive will rise again soon and what we always have here are the many nice posts and the exchange.

Thank you very much, I will be happy to write to you when the time comes.

I still have a long way to become a whale, but you've made it - congratulations.

Do you like it in the secret group of whales? 😉😁

Hi mate, welcome to the witness club. It's great to see that your running and hosting your own hardware, I own and host too, down under here in Adelaide. It's a bit more work as you need to factor in server maintenance / failures and any local issues such as power outages. The pro's are that no one can shut you down and its great for decentralization.

If you get any issues with the price feed I find that the hivefeed-js is a bit more stable, but see how you go. Can you send me a vote if you have a spare one, I will do the same.
