How Technology is Changing the Way we Grow, Prepare and Consume Food

Greetings to my beloved Cent family, it's your young writer @skyehi back once again with another awesome blog post for this wonderful community.

Before I get into today's topic I would like to say a big thank you to the Cent family and the team behind this great Community. This community has provided the perfect platform for me to share a lot of ideas and content which has helped me grow in my blogging skills. @anadolu and @centtoken have supported my blogs even outside of this community and I'm grateful. I know in my heart that as life takes me to different places I can always return to the Cent Community as my home and family.

In today's blog post on Cent, I'll be sharing on how technology is gradually changing the way we grow and consume food.

To begin with, I made an awesome and successful post a couple days ago in a science community called StemSocial about the science of cultured meat. Through new knowledge in science and new technology, scientists are able to take the cells of animals and grow them in the lab as meat. This is also called cell-based meat.

That's one of the wonders of science. The very thought that in the future we can finally eat meat without having to hurt any animal makes me very excited. That's the level of progress science is making when it comes to the way we will produce and consume meat.

Science is gradually transforming how we grow crops, cook our meals and eat the food we prepare.

I watched a few videos on YouTube showing some really futuristic looking structures that have been designed to allow for crops to be planted vertically in and around them. Gradually, farmers can grow crops vertically.

As you are already aware, farming usually takes up a lot of land and space. So much land that could be used for other productive projects are used for crops. Sometimes in a car driving across the road, I could observe a really huge land and all you see is corn or maize.

Imagine being able to plant them vertically instead. We will be able to save up quite a lot of space. The crops are basically stacked on top of each other to go upward instead of spreading out.

This basically means that if a particular piece of land could in the past hold 100 pieces of a particular crop, with this new technology, it should be able to hold at least over 1000 of the same crop.

Now with the help of drones and GPS technology, farmers can better predict the exact location to grow their crops and at what time they can effectively grow the right crops.

No more guessing whether or not it's the right land or right time. This goes to reduce the cost in resources since you wouldn't waste some in attempts of try and error.

Another very awesome thing technology is doing with the way we prepare food is by developing very smart kitchen gadgets that make cooking easier, faster and much more convenient than before.

Thanks to the IoT, Internet of Things, there are now ovens that you can literally control with your phone. You can have the oven on, off or even control the intensity of the heat or which part of the oven should be on or off.

There are softwares developed as an assistant to help you cook. It can literally suggest some cooking tips or recipes that will make you look like a professional Italian Chef before your friends and family 😂.

Besides the softwares that help you cook there are also apps that are for ordering and regulating delivery and payment of food. This is something I believe most people have started using especially in the very developed and advanced countries.

You could just be in the comfort of your home and order some Chinese food and have it delivered to you at the shortest possible time. It saves the time you would have used to go to the market, get the grocery, spend energy cooking in the kitchen, prepare the bowl for eating before getting your meal.

Trust me when I say that if you really pay attention to it, you would probably realize that you have spent more money doing all that rather than just ordering a full meal. It's my honest opinion though 😁. You basically order and track as your food gets to you. So that seems a bit easier and straight forward to me.

YpihifdXP4WNbGMdjw7e3DuhJWBvCw4SfuLZsrnJYHEpsqZFkiGGNCQTayu6EytKdg7zA3LL2PbZxrJGpWk6ZoZvBcJrADNFmaFEHagho8WsASbAA8jrpnELSvRtvjVuMiU1C5ADFX1vJgcpDvNtue9Pq83tjBKX62dqT5UoxtDk.png

Another thing you could do with the apps is to locate some pretty descent restaurants. You can easily discover the nearest coffee shop, burgers or even fancy restaurants with high standard dishes.

You may ask, @skyehi , what apps can do stuff like this? Well you've got apps like UberEats, Doordash or Grubhub. If you're in Africa there's a high chance you could have access to JumiaFood or Glovo.

Now when it comes to food, we start to talk a lot about Packaging. Lots of fast foods and snacks use serious packaging and that contributes to a huge portion of our plastic waste problem.

With very cool and advance technology, companies can now make food and other product packages using mushrooms that basically break down naturally. Now that means we're making less plastics and eventually saving our planet. It's a win-win situation for us and that mushroom that was going down anyways right 😁?

YpihifdXP4WNbGMdjw7e3DuhJWBvCw4SfuLZsrnJYHEpsqZFkiGGNCQTayu6EytKdg7zA3LL2PbZxrJGpWk6ZoZvBcJrADNFmaFEHagho8WsASbAA8jrpnELSvRtvjVuMiU1C5ADFX1vJgcpDvNtue9Pq83tjBKX62dqT5UoxtDk.png

Now one of the coolest things technology is doing with the way we consume food is in the area of safety. People mostly get concerned or even paranoid with where their food was made and whether it's safe to eat without any weird complications.

Some sources of these meals could be places of low sanitation or even the ingredients used could be harmful to us.

Some literally use crops that have been freshly grown with chemicals to speed the growth. If you know about these chemicals, it's more ideal to wait for the chemicals to wear off of the crop before using it for food.

How do we detect the source of our foods when they are delivered to us?

Well with Blockchain technology we can track the source of the food. Wouldn't that be a great and cool thing. We will finally feel safe with what we consume knowing that it's from a credible source.

I believe these few points have given you a good enough picture of what technology is doing in changing the way we grow, prepare and eat our foods. From vertical crop farming to advanced technology and softwares, there's a lot that we can expect to see in the future.
