AI-Powered Drug Discovery - Accelerating Pharmaceutical Research
Greetings to my favorite science community online, StemSocial.
In this modern day and age, one thing that I believe we can all agree on is the impact of Artificial Intelligence, AI in different fields of study, solutions to problems and changing concepts for the better.
I personally admire the prospect or potential I see with AI for our future.
From transportation to medicine, AI seems to be entering all fields.
One very interesting field I believe AI is starting to do really good job in revolutionizing is the process of discovering novel medications.
In today's blog, I'll share with you a few thoughts on how AI is helping to accelerate pharmaceutical research all over the world.

Through very advanced technological applications, there's an accelerated identification of potential drugs. Doctors, scientists or researchers are able to find solutions to different sicknesses through drugs quicker. This new system of identifying drugs clearly surpasses the speed and accuracy of old ways or previous methodologies if you will.
Traditional approaches to discovering or making drugs for diseases were not all bad but to be honest very sluggish, expensive and also very uncertain. Researches were conducted and mostly we wouldn't know whether it would work or not.
All this guess work was getting pretty expensive because of the number of times we needed to conduct the research after failing the previous times.
But the introduction of Artificial Intelligence into this field or journey has completely changed the story. Things are pretty different nowadays.
The potential of AI to make this field of medical science work effectively lies in its ability to process a vast amount of complex biological data.
We all know how advanced and powerful AI can get when it comes to using algorithms to work the math of complex issues. It takes the biological data of patients and combines or compares it with other data and what it has been trained to do to come up with possible drugs that can solve the problem.
AI is fed with a lot of information and what happens is that it attempts to find a possible solution to the diesease based on the data it has been given.
It's almost like when we're given this very complex math answer and we're told to find the possible question that could lead to this answer - I don't know if you've ever worked that kind of math before.
This really swift analysis ability of AI makes finding potential drugs to diseases easier than it used to be before. More of the work and calculations is done by the computer and not the medical scientist.
It makes decision making easier and faster and helps us to spend less time and resources in finding solutions to Medical issues or diseases.
Also, AI has become a powerful tool for simulating virtual models of millions of chemical compounds. It can take different chemical compounds and perform its own analysis to come up with new compounds that could be literal cures to dieseases.
That predictive ability of AI enables a deeper understanding of the biological behavior of these compounds and in the end, broadening the scope of potential drug candidates and also amplifying the likelihood of identifying successful drug options.
Indeed, Artificial Intelligence is making drug identification faster and more effective
With our progress in developing and improving the capabilities of AI, I strongly believe we could find cures even faster in the future and that will definitely save a lot more lives.
You'd be surprise to know that AI's capabilities extends beyond what I just described.
AI is really good at identifying intricate patterns and interconnections within convoluted datasets.
This capability is very necessary because it makes it possible to tailor medical treatments to suit an individual's genetic makeup and specific health conditions.
I shared a blog about the importance of custom drugs designed specifically for the patients genetics.
As we may already know, people respond very differently to the same drugs. The drug that might be of help or enough for one patient may not be enough for another because of the difference in their genetics. This is what makes AI so necessary to use.
This would not only end up enhancing the patient's care, but will also diminish the occurrence of adverse side effects. Some side effects of drugs can literally be worse than the sickness it intended to cure.
I believe that the collaborative nature of AI is very importance in drug discovery.
What I believe is necessary is for experts from various domains such as biology, chemistry, and computer science to work together with the power of Artificial Intelligence.
With this level of teamwork, AI would definitely accelerate the process of discovering and refining drug candidates which would also lead to reducing the probability of unsuccessful trials. These unsuccessful trials are what make drug discovery or manufacturing very expensive and take a while to complete.
The Challenges Involved
Now as you may already know if you've been following my medical blogs, I almost never skip talking about the challenges involved.
A few of the challenges invloved in this field of medical science would be trying to understand the interpretation of AI-generated outcomes. It's not that easy to interpret what the AI discovers or creates as a result from analysing patient biological data.
Another challenge which I literally wrote a blog yesterday about is patient Health Data. We're faced with the challenge of ensuring the security of individuals' data.
We also have to deal with establishing guidelines for incorporating AI into drug development are significant areas warranting attention.
Inspite of all these hurdles or challenges we face, this beautiful duo between AI and drug discovery is clearly and dynamically altering the pharmaceutical realm.
As our technology advances or evolves and our knowledge expands, the prospects of discovering new treatments and cures increases in probability.
As I end today's blog, just like I said earlier on, Artificial Intelligence will make a huge difference in our world and basically every field of work especially medical science and pharmaceutical research.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read today's blog. I hope you found it both insightful and inspiring to read. If you have any question or comment regarding the blog topic, I'll be more than happy to respond to them.
