The Madagascar Monkey π
I've come across a lot of exotic and weird animals online. Most of them from @trumpman's #stem postsπ.
Yet, in all the weirds and unique I've seen. This is one all on its own.
The Madagascar Aye - Aye
This weird looking beast is a primate that reigns in the forest of Madagascar.
It's the biggest nocturnal primate, and has six fingers.
Due to it's unique looks, it's a honey trap for hunters and now it's numbers are dwindling...
To be honest, I'd want to catch and keep one too πππ
Well, one of its main characteristics features is from the way it gets its food.
It first taps on trees to find grubs. Then it uses it's ever growing incisors to bore holes on the stems, where it inserts it's narrow long middle finger and drags the grubs out to eat.
A unique method of foraging called Percussive Foraging, with the only other 2 mammals known to do this are the Lemurs and Trioks.
The name, "Aye-Aye" was supposedly given to it as thats the resemblance to the sound it makes when running away.
But what does this have to do with coin stacking?
Well, this unique mammal actually has a coin dedicated to it.
The Madagascar 1oz Silver Ariari (1988)
My African Series coin collection is a stackers dream when looking for silver wildlife.
As far as I know, there's a South African kruggerand π, a Nile Crocodile π and now a Madagascar Aye-Aye π.
This coin in contrast to the animal, isn't that scarce, with a 25,000 mintage.
Although it's still a lovely something to add to ones collection π
- Images of coin was gotten from here
My Instagram page.
Gosh, I just happen to have that very coin too.
Commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund in a set for that year.
I just never got around to sharing it.
You should share itπ
