Non-Newtonian / Rebel Liquids ⛲🧪

Now its been some time since I wrote a science post or even come on to this STEM community as a whole.
With the start of my holiday, I made sure to scrap anything education-like and just have a jolly good time enjoying my summer😂.

It was a good break from the books and science blogs but now I'm back with something I read about last week that is still blowing my mind till now.

Non-Newtonian Liquids.

This defined simply is a Liquid that doesn't follows Newton's Laws of viscosity. I dubbed them the rebel liquids😂

In Non-newtonian liquid's, their degree of viscosity constantly varies with the amount of stress that is applied on the liquid.

Now it may sound terribly rare to see or sound incredibly unique, but these fluids are seen practically everywhere.

Take the Ketchup in the Ketchup bottle for example.

It's a Non-newtonian fluid. The fact that it becomes more runnier when shook, unlike the Newtonian liquid's that's standardly runny till frozen(water, fanta, etc)

Now there are a whole lot of household stuffs that are rebel Liquids. For example, Custard, Cream, Blood, toothpaste, melted butter, shampoo.. the list goes on.

Now one particularly famous example of Non-Newtonian liquids and the main character that got me here is the famous Oobleck

This has to be one of the cheapest, most effective example of a non-newtonian fluid.
Oobleck which is simply known as a solution of cornstarch and water, mixed in the quantities of 1 part of water to 1.5 parts or 2 parts of starch.
The name "Oobleck" was derived from the Dr Seuss's book: "Bartholomew and the Oobleck", regardless this solution is also known as magic mud or ooze and for good reason too.

This rebel fluid is probably one of the strongest things you'll see (with the right quantity and the right amount of stress applied😂).
Because of it's special dilatant properties, it is used in different demonstrations that showcases it's behavior.

For example;

  • A person could try to punch through a bucket of Oobleck only for his fist to be deflected.
Yet when he slowly presses his fist into the bucket, his hand would go in smoothly.

This is because when great stress is applied to this particular liquid, it's viscosity hardens and it becomes solid like, but when stress is reduced, it would go back to it's thin, liquid filmed form.

A fist isn't the only thing that could be kept out.

  • A person could also walk on a large tub of this magic mud without sinking

Ofcourse, this is considering the fact the person walks fast enough and with enough force in each step to keep himself afloat.

Apparently there are a whole lot more strange, unique non-newtonian liquids just like the Oobleck.
Yet one can't help but wonder at the capabilities of such properties.

Imagine a bulletproof made with Oobleck?

Would it hold or...🤔

Regardless I guess it's for the scientists to find out.

I wasn't expecting a science post in the #fun feed. But Oobleck looks like something that would keep my grandsons entertained for hours - if I ever let them have a turn!

😂😂😂 science can be fun at times.

I know a nice easy menthols volcano recipe that can be used to recreate the dinosaurs untimely demise.

Although cleaning up, would make you wish you went extinct with the dinosaurs 😂😂

You've reminded me of the #fun we had in Chemistry at school. She used to love demonstrating her lessons with experiments like throwing alkali metals into water. The classroom ceiling bore the stains for years!
