We are in the digital age where being connected online has become an integral part of our everyday life whether it was for entertainment or for work. Because of that, spending time in front of different screen devices has become the norm for many people of all ages which can result on too much screen time consumption and with it also comes with the potential problems including the persons health. As much as I want to deny it, I am one of those with too much screen time consumption where it has taken far more time than my sleep. A big part of it was the nature of my job and my hobbies.

My weekdays schedule from hl-w105e2

As many of you probably know, I work as an I.T. for a BPO company which mainly involves fixing and maintaining computers, making it inevitable for me to be in front of the screen, working 8 hours on weekdays and 6 hours on Saturday though its not like I got to spend all the time looking in front of the monitor. It's not as if we need to watch the computer all the time, waiting for the applications to be installed since it will not make the process faster so we got to multitask on other things but there was really no quota or anything as long as we resolved the issue within 24-48 hours period which makes the work very chill, allowing us to talk whenever were free.

When I was free from work, I still have spent most of my time in front of the screen whether I watch Anime, read Manga, playing games and even the time that I have spent in order to make my blog. You might think that I get some time away from the screen when I travel but no! I still probably use that time to check on my phone given that I commute from home. So almost 2/3rd of my time during weekday was spent in front of the screens.

The saving grace would probably be during the short time during dinner as we have a "No phone policy" while we are eating and when I was preparing for work. Other than that was when guest or friends arrive at home for whatever reason or the 2-3 hours that I would spend on Gym from Friday- Sunday.

When I Had Enough?

When it comes to work, I got to be professional so the time when I think I will had enough was either when I take a leave or resigns to the job but as I told above, I do not need to take a look in the front of computer when I don't have anything to do and if I get a little dizzy, I can have a quick AFK when going to the restroom or to buy a coffee. As for when I'm home, I would occasionally take a break from time to time and play with the dogs to replenish my energy and go back to what I am doing until eventually, I feel the need to rest my body for the day. I also refrain from eating anything 4 hours before I sleep cause I read on article that it makes it harder to sleep.

What Do I Do to Reduce Screen Time?

As long as its for work- related stuff that you spend your screen time, I guess the best way to do it is to repurpose your screen time on other activities like sports or art like how I usually use 2-3 hours of my time from Friday- Sunday on Gym. Having pets can also be helpful no only to take away your screen time but also to relieve your stress by taking care of them and providing thier needs. Most of all, just like us, they need some attention and as a pet owner, it is our responsibility to give the attention that they need.

Other things I do would be to spend time together with other people. It can be your family or friends but as much as possible, try to keep connected to people personally. Remember how I was have been unable to post from mid February to mid March? It was because I have been on various celebrations such as weddings and birthdays which have kept me from writing anything from that time. While its more of an occasional thing, it still keep me away from my screen.

If its really impossible to keep yourself on the screen just like me, other advice that I can give was to always try to use your screens on a well lit room or change it to dark mode to reduce its brightness. Make sure to keep a certain distance in front of the monitor but if you're having a problem reading the text on the screen, try to zoom the text instead of getting closer to the screen. In that way, you can at least the risk of damaging your eyes even with an excessive screen time.

Thank you for reading my post and see you on the next one!
