5 Things I Wish I Knew About My Health Early

Health is one of the greatest aspects of our life and yet majority of us do not take enough care of it when we are young. In retrospect, there are numerous things I would have known concerning my health at an early age.

These are some of the lessons that I would have benefited earlier on in my life and would have enjoyed a better and healthier life. These are the five key things that I would have liked to know.

Eating Healthy Matters More Than I Thought

In my younger age, I had not considered much about what I consumed. My favorites were fast food, sweet drinks and snacks. I would have liked to learn that the food we consume has an influence in our body, which we do not realize at the moment.

Studies indicate that consuming excessive amounts of sugar and processed foods may make people obese, diabetic, and have heart issues in their adulthood (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, 2023).

I also discovered a healthy lifestyle that involves consumption of more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains at an early age by means of boosting our immune system and keeping our organs healthy.

Even staying thin is not the sole reason why you should eat healthy, but also to save your life against major diseases.

Exercise Is Not Optional

I also hope that I had known at a young age that exercising my body is not only to lose weight. Working out is good not only for the muscles, lungs and heart, but the brain too. Research indicates that physical exercise can be used to decrease the risk of depression, enhance memory, and decrease the likelihood of heart disease and stroke (World Health Organization, 2022).

I have been sitting and spending hours thinking that it was all well but now I know that this can make a great difference even 30 minutes of walking a day. Exercise is medicine and it performs best when we begin at an early age.

Sleep Is Serious, Not Just Rest

As a young person, I used to keep myself up late watching shows or playing games believing that I may recuperate on sleep at a later date. I would have wanted to know that sleep is not only a rest period to the body but a crucial period in which the body recuperates.

Sleep deprivation may have an impact on concentration, weaken the immune system, and even lead to the risk of obesity and heart disease (National Sleep Foundation, 2021). Studies also indicate that sleep aids the brain to process the memories and to control emotions.

It is not a luxury to go to bed at the appropriate time and sleep 7-9 hours per night but a necessity to be healthy.

Mental Health Is As Important As Physical Health

When I was young, I was not very concerned with my psychological well-being. I believed that stress, sadness, or worry is a normal phenomenon that will disappear on its own. I have learnt that physical health is influenced by mental health.

Stress in the long term may raise blood pressure, undermine immunity, and result in severe disease (American Psychological Association, 2022). It is important to take care of your mind, that is, you should talk to someone, meditate, or just rest.

I would have hoped to know that asking someone to help me with mental health is not a sign of weakness, but smartness to save my life and body.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Lastly, I should have learned the strength of prevention at an early stage. Most diseases can be avoided becoming severe by visiting the doctor regularly to check their health, take vaccines and perform basic screenings.

As an illustration, heart attacks and kidney problems can be averted through early identification of the condition of high blood pressure or diabetes. I once believed that I only needed to visit the doctor when I felt ill, but it has been found out that there are numerous health conditions that do not manifest their symptoms until they become dangerous (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

The ability to do things before they become a problem would have spared me stress, pain and even money.

In retrospect, I understand that health is not an issue about which one needs to be concerned only when there are problems. The food we consume, the way we exercise, how we sleep, how we take care of our mind and how we avoid disease all determine the quality of our lives.

These are the lessons that I wish I had learned sooner, however, there is no better time like the present to begin. Taking care of our health in the present day will enable us to live longer, become more robust, and enjoy life more. The body that we currently possess is a gift and we should always take good care of it.
