Have you heard of the condition that make people SMELL LIKE FISH ? Find out more 👇
I would be going straight to the point. This condition is called the fish odor syndrome also known as Trimethylaminuria.
Alright , here’s the gist, this condition basically makes your body smell like fish. Not the fresh, fancy sushi-grade kind of fish. Nope, we’re talking “forgotten at the bottom of the fridge” kind of fish. And no, the person doesn’t bathe in fish oil , fish water or secretly work as a fishmonger. It’s just something more like a glitch in their body’s system, body chemistry, body Physiology, yeah those kind of thing.
How and why does this happen?
Well, you see, there’s this chemical called trimethylamine (say that three times fast). It’s a totally normal thing produced when you eat certain foods. Now you see, for most people, their liver acts like a responsible adult and breaks it down into something harmless and odorless. But for people with Fish Odor Syndrome, their liver basically says, “Eh, not my problem,” and leaves the trimethylamine running wild. This smelly little troublemaker exits the body through sweat, breath, and urine, making the person smell like, well, an underwater nightmare.
Now, let’s be honest, this sounds like the plot showing the few minutes intro to a horror movie . But for the folks living with it, it’s more like a situation where the villain is always lurking, ready to strike at the worst possible moment. Imagine gearing up for a first date. You’re dressed to the nines, hair on point, feeling unstoppable. Then halfway through dinner, your date’s nose twitches, and they casually ask, “Did they cook seafood in this restaurant?” Yeah, romance gone overboard and straight to the bottom of the sea.
Social situations? Absolute chaos. Job interviews? A minefield. Can you imagine explaining this to your boss? “I promise I’m not carrying a fish in my pocket, it’s just my body chemistry doing it thing" blah! blah! blah! that sorta thing.
So, how do people manage this condition?

Well, there’s no magic spray or anti-fish pill to fix it, but there are ways to keep the smell in check. Diet becomes a full-time job. Foods like fish (the irony!), eggs, and certain veggies like broccoli are a no-go zones. You basically have to dodge all the delicious stuff that makes life fun. And even then, the smell might still pop up when you least expect it like a nosy neighbor who just has to know what you’re up to.
To make things even better (sarcasm intended), this condition isn’t contagious. You’d think people would know that, but nope. Some will still dart away from you in public like you’re carrying a bag of radioactive tuna or sardine. Their noses lead them, and their logic stays at home.
So, what’s the lesson here? If you catch a whiff of something fishy, don’t assume someone’s been sneaking snacks out of a seafood bucket or hitting excessive amount of fish or working as a fish monger . They might be living with a condition that’s more complicated and let’s face it, problematic than it seems.

On a lighter note and focusing more on the positive side to all this, if you’re this particular someone with Fish Odor Syndrome, well, own that shit ! Yes, own it, it basically the only way cus you have got a unique story that would surely make people pay attention. You can lead an awareness campaign, one that increases the global awareness of this condition. Sure, of course, life might smell a little funky, but you’ve got character. After all, not everyone can say they’re the main character in their very own fishy story. But remember to take good care of yourself and of course do the needful . Peace out ✌️
Thanks for reading, Sayonara 👋
There was a man in one the towns i have lived in, that they called The fisher. He smelt fish but that was normal because he was always in touch with fish. Basically he had a business fish.
Interesting to know about this kind of ‘síndrome’
I am glad that this enlightened you. I have also encountered people who smell like fish, some were into fish business, they were fish mongers, some were not and didn't even have anything to do with fish finding out about this syndrome explains alot .
This is terrible. There was a girl when we were in school who smelt like fish. Bullies in school then usually call her Fish Monger and it was terrible that she always had fish in her food. Sincerely I cannot imagine what could have been running through her mind at the time
Interesting, but hAre her parents into fish business ? Probably that is the likely cause ?
